  1. Ireland lost all of these under British rule, and regained some of them after it left the UK. Irish culture has more visibility than its Danish counterpart and Irish identity is more confident that it has ever been.

  8. Nobody is going to remember that fiction Johnny. The fact is that the bulk of the Irish bailout was provided by the IMF, the ECB and Denmark. The UK provided 7 billion which is mostly paid back already.

You will be joining the following countries who trade under WTO and have no other trade deals: Holy See, Mauritania, Monaco, Montenegro, Palau, Timor-Leste, Sao Tome and Principe, Serbia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and last but not least.....Western Sahara. This is the complete list of the nations who trade only under WTO rules. Appropriate. A clear indication of BREXITEER's ambitions. Your country will require a Trade Deal with the EU, which of course will require the payment of £39 Billion just to open discussions. The humiliation begins for you all then.

  13. @ A Westenholz No, Brexit is not like that all If you go out for a pack of cigarettes you know where you are going, how long it will take and when you will be back. Coming back is an intention. You will know how much the cigarettes cost and how you will get there. You have, in fact, a rudimentary plan. Brexit characterized by the complete absence of a plan. Instead you have an inarticulate England nationalism, taking the whole of the UK off on a mystery tour to an imagined pleasant land called Brexit, without a map, food, agreed means of transport or money. Instead it is simply equipped with the faith that it will all be alright and you will get there - if everyone just believes hard enough. In the end UK just finds itself lost and simply has to come home, the way you came - and they will find the door open at the EU, once they realise their limitations and stop acting up. That's Brexit.

  21. Ireland won't thrive in the same way as it would if the UK remained, but it will recover because it is part of the EU. Not every aspect of the Irish economy will be affected equally, but I'm sure the UK can say the same. Futhermore, Brexit will end any remain psychological dependence the Irish have with the UK. Heads do not need to be examined, the facts on the other hand, do.

The Scots will depart and go their own way while the Northern Irish will probably fight among themselves as to whether they should also go it alone or stick with the English.

The Irish regularly 'vote again' on constitutional changes - twice for the Nice Treaty, Twice on Divorce, and a whopping 5 times in 35 year on abortion. The Irish demand the right to change their minds - once circumstances, opinions or facts change. The UK votes on proven lies and consider the result to be democratic - laughable nonsense to the Irish. You can tell that the English in particular are pretty juvenile in their relationship with referenda. Irish support for EU membership is running at 92% (May 2018), and has increased since the UK vote. You suggesting the Irish government should case aside the will of their voters? No Irish politician in history has lost votes standing up to the English, but many careers have been destroyed doing the opposite.

  27. @DUMBASS You joined the EU because the UK was 'the sick man of Europe'. The UK had won the war but it lost its empire. Germany, on the other hand, has out-performed the UK since the 1950s. Between 1945 to 1973, you lost all your traditional industries, had the embarrassment of Suez, a period of three-day week's, powercuts, and a bailout. Hardly a stellar performance. The English in particular resent this, and actually joined the EU out of a sense of failure, while at the same time convincing themselves that they were doing the Europeans a favour. What is Brexit but the politics of self-pity.

Its choosing to leave the EU at a time of increasing economic uncertainty internationally, without a trade deal or a withdrawal agreement, which it hopes to cope with through the power of 'belief in Britain' and positive thinking. The UK is facing higher inflation, less purchasing power, a weaker pound at a time when its got a huge set of imbalances, huge trade and budget deficits and can't feed itself. People are living way above their savings in an economy fueled by too much consumer borrowing; the household budget is getting worse; the trade deficit is getting worse; public borrowing is getting worse. The UK is voluntarily putting barriers up against its biggest market with all its economies of scale.

  31. No of course not - they're unemployed. Perhaps there is a case to be made for the their level of benefits: would they be as good if they weren't in the EU? But of course your question is simplistic if not spurious. The real question to ask is 'do these EU citizens benefit from the domestic youth employment policies of Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal?' I would ask 'why don't they get up off their arses and use the benefit of free movement to find a job in another EU country, like the Irish, Poles or the Lithuanians do instead of holding onto their mothers apron strings?' When the Spanish and Portuguese joined the EEC in 1984 there were fears in the UK (where else) that they would be swamped by hordes Iberians stealing their jobs. That's because youth unemployment was relatively high there in 1984 too. But it never happened. The Greeks joined the EU in 1981 and did sweet FA to develop and open up their economy and only export Feta and Olive oil. Why would there NOT be high youth unemployment in Greece now that their economic inefficiencies are not concealed by their 'jobs for the boys' bloated public service that their tax evading culture could not sustain? Lets blame the EU? The Italians have been living beyond their means for decades, but they insist on access to personal and public debt as though it is some sort of right. EUs fault? The point is, all of these countries are responsible for their own policies on youth employment and economic development. If it were a failure of the EU that was responsible then there would be high youth unemployment in the rest of the EU too. Your reposte is simplistic and illogical. We will ignore the fact that 4.500 jobs have come to Ireland as a result of Brexit - the workers must be living on the street after all. We will also ignore the record number of homeless and increased number of foodbanks in the UK which has no influence on the lives of people working in the financial services sector whatsoever, but apply it in relation to Ireland only.   43. @ Same the Prophet They're already helping the Irish through their solidarity. Apparently, Brexiters thought that the Irish would be thrown under a bust by the German Car Industry... Furthermore, the German government has indicated that there is an untapped market for prime Irish beef among young affluent Germans who are prepared to pay a bit more for grass feed beef. Kerrygold butter, I understand, is already a brand leader in Germany. Irish exports to the EU dwarfs that to the UK. There will be suffering in Ireland because of Brexit, but the Irish will pivot their economy away from the UK in the coming years. And then there's China... The only nonsense in the comments section here is coming from Brexiters, as usual.

  45. @ compendious succient No business wishing to trade with the EU will move to the UK as you will be leaving the bloc. Instead, as the only English speaking country in the EU and with close links to the US, Ireland will continue to hoover up FDI dollars. This is because Ireland has not only a the low corporation tax, but crucially has freedom of movement, a well educated work force, excellent air links to the EU and the United States, and high productivity. This is why Ireland has been killing it as a member of the EU and the UK has not. Post Brexit, you are facing high inflation and a negative supply shock - hardly an attractive model for investment.

  51. The EU Commission has already demanded the same corporation tax across the EU. Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden and Luxembourg all blocked it. You'd swear the EU was dictatorship they way you going on about it. Eventually, the corporation tax will be harmonised across the OECD - an entirely different kettle of fish. Ireland will still be the only English speaking country in the EU, the natural hub between the USA and the EU - FDI will probably be fine.
