@ MrKingdig 'No borders is a globalists pipedream designed to make global corporations lots more money...' The people of Ireland VOTED to have an open border in Ireland in two binding referenda which gave mandate to the international treaty that is the Belfast Agreement. It has nothing to do with globalism - whatever that is - and everything to do with peace and relationship building.

If Ireland has to put up a border the UKs trade deal with the US will be blocked by Congress. So it may be short lived.

You can google it in google news - Nancy Pelosi has said it several times and in April, she traveled to London to tell the ERG. It got little coverage in the UK.

Why was there a hard border between NI and the ROI from 1922 until 1992 if the backstop is just about the Common Travel Area?

Oh Pamela. O'Connell is a great Irish name, you will find a street with the name in every Irish town and city, named for Daniel O'Connell - the first Catholic MP in Parliament, an Abolitionist, and an emancipator of Jews and other minorities. If he were alive today he would embarrassed by your ignorance.

Ireland will have to put up a border to protect the SM.

@martinmckay3241 Oh gimme a break with the misty eyed bullshit. Kiddy fiddling existed in O'Connells time and has only been eliminated in recent years. He was a liberal in his day, but nobody can know what his stand on abortion might have been.

@no-rj2ez It's not the 19th century and you don't have a military that can hold Ireland. It would be another humiliation for you in afraid, and confirmation of the UK status as some sort of rogue state.

@blakepierce5791 correct. There's a road from Dundalk to Monaghan that crosses the border 5 times. There are churches on one side of the border with adjoining cemeteries on the other. It runs through homes, farms and businesses...

MrKingdig Oh the irony of your comment. Are you suggesting a rerun of the Brexit referendum? There is precisely zero interest in reversing the GFA in Ireland as it is only a problem for the English who have no say in it.

'it wasn't a hard border, I'm no expert but I do know in 1922 the border was created, and allowed free passage of people and goods between them' There were customs posts on the border, constituting a hard border of a kind not acceptable under the GFA. https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1920&bih=951&ei=S5pAXdD0Cue61fAPjJGJsAY&q=customs+post+irish+border&oq=customs+post+irish+border&gs_l=img.3...4431.10926..11610...3.0..0.109.1621.29j1......0....1..gws-wiz-img.....0..35i39j0j0i24j0i30.sRYQnojc2d4&ved=0ahUKEwiQxtaSsN3jAhVnXRUIHYxIAmYQ4dUDCAU&uact=5#imgrc=sCMLx6GRcm5pGM:
