The same argument was made against Ireland becoming independent in 1921. It was a different world, but in the 1950s, 90% of Irish exports went to the the UK and on the eve of joining the EEC in 1973, it was still well over 70%. Today Ireland has a more globablised, dynamic and innovative economy, a more productive work force and leaves the UK in the dust as an exporting powerhouse. It leads the UK in many human development indices, and is the 6th biggest foreign investor into the United States, the destiny of 27% of Ireland's exports. If Ireland can do it, there is no reason why Scotland can't do it too.
Where would Scotland rank as an export market for goods from England, Northern Ireland and the Wales if it becomes independent? Surely it would be higher than Ireland, the UKs fifth most important export market.
Common sense would dictate that the Scots should leave the UK and amplify its sovereignty with the other nations of the EU through membership of the bloc. This would enhance the prosperity of it people in the long-term.
