His actual words were mocking warnings from western observers when two days before the invasion he said: „rubbish, it would be stupid, I have no intentsion to invade Ukraine“ But Putin has written essays and shown maps of what he considers rightfully „Russian“. Kremlin folks have mentioned these areas by name and Putin is already making the same moves on Moldova he did originally on Ukraine. He regularily interferes in neigbouring countries goverments KGB style: in the past crushed Chechna and made moves on Georgia. Putin had intended to overrun Ukraine and boosted by their numbers continue further in his aim to recapture the influence and power of the Soviet sized past, taking back these territories. He has already made moves on Moldova and Estonia. Underhand disruption and bribery first, then physical take over.

  3. Not Russia, soviets. Included Ukrainians! Russia was happy to join Hitler and attack Poland. They only turned against Hitler when Hitler betrayed Stalin and broke their friendship agreement. The Soviets lost a lot of people on the Eastern front pushing back the Germans. The Germans lost mainly because they had overstretched and had supply problems, then the greatest killer, for both sides was the exceptionally cold winter. And Russian deaths were extra high because of the same tactics they use in Ukrsine today. Pushing men forwards en mass on believing the ones behind have a chance of getting though after the forerunners have been killed. They were and are willing to sacrifice their own citizens. A sacrifice in honour to the regime.

These people are being used as pawns by Putin. The disturbance to Westen democracies a bonus to his cause.

  6. @chuckkottke i think China is just watching on the sidelines. Maybe doing a bit to keep Russia onside. They have calculated that should Russia loose, they will need a lot of help to rebuild. The price-tag could be Turning Land in the east over to China in exchange for help with a rebuild of Russias infrastructure. .
