Also, Putin is happy to have Russia on war footing. It gives him better control over the people. As times get harder in the rural areas, he will have more poor eager to be soldiers. Thousands are dying each week. He needs more. They are getting more and more dependant on him, so will do what they are told, to survive.

@cdt996 that is not entirely what is happening here though. The heavy bombing they are inflicting on the civilians are not part of their street by street fighting. The Russian are using tactics they used in .Syria and elsewhere. Look at all the towns and villages they have captured. Smashed to rubble. They do not capture working towns. They do not know how. As you say it would be messy and too difficult. They are bombing indiscriminately. They openly said they aim at shopping centres and electricity stations to demoralise the people. In Kharkiv, a city nearest the boarder they send out drones and pick off civilians. People hide their cars under trees hoping to will be able to drive to the shops unseen by Russian drones. They had drones drop bombs on them as they, civilians, wait at the bus stops.

@TheSanAnt0ni0 But that is not entirely what is happening here. Russians are usung the same tactics they used in Syria and elsewhere. Turning built up areas to rubble. Indiscriminate bombing. They cannot cope with Street by street fighting, as you say it is messy and dangerous. They have openly announced (state TV) that bombing shopping centres and power stations is to demoralise the citizens. In the city of Kharkiv, nearest to the boarder they send in drones to pick off civilians. Residents try to hide their cars under trees and hope they can get to them to drive to the shops without being seen. They have had Russian drones drop devices on neigbiur while they were waiting at the bus stop. Civilians. Same as in Bucha, at the very first few days of the invasion, they rolled into town raped and tourtured civilians. Shot at passers by riding pushbikes or walking pushing a pram. These are not soldiers keen to fight soldiers, they are very much into firing into built up areas, hospitals, etc regardless.
