  3.  @stephanielariviere1539  mostly same, though I do occationally mend/modify my own clothes and attatch badges by sewing. This year I've replaced one zipper fly and mended a shoe that was coming apart along a side seam where the thread had been chafed off by use. ^^

  28. Thine tender care and gentle passion has clearly soothed and charmed the macine spirit of this long neglected sowing device. Glorious work indeed! As a side note, as a former process and maintenance tech, I would probably considder tagging and numbering all the pieces and their place by how they are connected onto a photographic diagram while gently taking it all apart piece by piece, using organic, non abrasive and non corrosive de-greaser and a soft non abrasive cloth on metal parts to clean it all before lightly re-lubricating that which needs it and replacing any broken or heavily worn parts if possible before re-assembly. And if any parts are stuck together, give them a long WD40 soak until they come apart where they are supposed to do so smoothly without any struggle. The leather and wood, I would probably replace with modern replicates regardless of if it was broken or worn or not, just to conservate as many original parts as possible.

Ah, and another feature of modern comforts: waste water treatment, sewage networks and the indoor toilets they enable that means ochre in the mud and grass stains is the worst of your problems as long as you manage to avoid irresponsible dog walkers. As for the gasoline, it's for chemically degreasing the garments. As you lift and re-soak the garments in the soapy water, the gasoline dissolves grease residue caught inside the fibres where the sope alone can't reach, and, as gasoline is far less dense than water, it will then retain that residue at the surface as the fabric is dunked under and as the gasoline gradually evaporate, it leaves the dirt free floating behind, allowing the tensides in the soap to flock around the dirt preventing them from reattatching to the fabric and get rinsed out. IIRC.

Depends, it's very hard to get even colour saturation on a finished garment compared to a flat length of fabric as the assembly of a garment creates folds, layers as well as compacts the fabric at the seams, and those features take a longer time to soak through and saturate with pigment sollution, fixative sollution and complicates rinsing out excess chemicals. What I can see as possible would be to colour after cutting the pieces, or to colour the deconstructed pieces of a garment that passed out of style as part of a redesign.

One modern risk I can see with both corsets and medical braces is one that's also shared with modern ballistic protection vests: In a car crash, the rigidity they all provide will focus the entirety of the impact force to the parts of the spine where the stiffening garment ends, something that tends to significantly increase the risk of severe spinal injury, including but not limited to paralysis and/or death. That said, your historical lectures are very interesting and entertaining to watch due to your witty and perfectly balanced snarkyness along with a plesant voice that makes it easier to focus on the content itself.   38.  @Jennaswirly  yeah,the last time I had to dig a one-off personal latrine pit was during conscript training (I'm European) back in 2004, but I've always prefered carrying a pound or two of extra weight in gear to coming up in an unexpected situation of needing but not having the tools for any specific need.

  44. Just remember, radium/uranium glass that glows of itself can also release small amounts of alpha radioactive dust if chafed, polished or when breaking... Dust that is cancerogenous and toxic (heavy metal toxicity) if inhaled, ingested or allowed prolonged direct skin contact. So don't use such items if you get any, mount them only for static decorative displays. For like asbestos, they are generally safe when just sitting around, and alpha radiation is stopped by any material dense enough to deflect a breath of air.

  45. Also, I'm so going to try to make a tea kettle holder/heater like that for my tea-gulping spouse as soon as I find the time and focus to get my blacksmiths forge in order! It's pure geniality in convenience and space saving! Though I might add a small locker, a number of small hooks and a shelf on the sides to hold a couple of tea tins, a cup, a couple of tea sivs, a teaspoon, a sugar tin and a plate of bisquits or scones to eliminate the need for a side table when they paint or do other kinds of work ^^

  46. Keeping my fingers crossed for you to be able to find a new and at least as good job again soon! I lucked out by living in a country where the govt enacted suspended employment subsidies, so when the taxi buisness dropped like the titanic back in march, I could still work at 40% while the government subsidized my employer to pay me 96% of my pre-covid wage until he could find a goods distribution contract that allowed me and a colleague to go back to full time work.

Asbestos is a mineral that naturally forms fibrous, crystal tubes, these crystals are long, thinner than cat hairs and covered in jagged needle like barbs where the crystals form natural fault lines that can shatter into smaller, even sharper barbed fibrous crystal shards. In addition to beeing chemically toxic and carcinogen, the barbs and sharpness of the asbestos crystals means that they easily catches in living tissue and is worked in deeper by muscle movement, this creates a point of constant tissue irritation and scarring along the fibres path through the tissue which, enhances it's carcinogenic properties, both of which are very similiar to the strictly chemical and crystalline properties of metallic Uranium...
