It's a feature AND a bug...
16
I'm sticking to my studded Nokian winter tyres thank you ;) I do run Pirelli summer tyres though :)
16
This would be interesting to know
15
+B10401 not really, as most non-english countries have to learn english to get full use of our computers, tvs and smart phones/tablets while the farenheit system is just pointless and counter intuitive when everything around us is in the metric SI-system.

Since they knew the fuel pump would have to be replaced multiple times during the race, why didn't they design the pump assembly as an easily accessible 5min quick change module?
8
@konstantin.v if you leave less than a 2.5 sec gap in Sweden and thd police spots it, you'll get a reckless driving ticket @60-120€ plus a mark towards loosing your driver's licence.
8
@steveXracer and how would that be a bad thing?
5
And an actual flexible whiteboard surface on the back
5
@RustOnWheels it's still a premium feature. Didn't get one in my current car (2010 model I30 CRDi turbo diesel) Got punished for it while visiting friends further north in Sweden than where I live... Had to use starter cables from my friend's gasoline car as -35°C was too cold for the battery in my car to get the heating coils in my engine hot enough to allow ignition before the battery went flat.

Sounds like he topped upp the coolant with distilled water throughout summer while nevef reflecting over the probability that there was a leak...
4
+Bill fred hooe you don't kill or hurt anyone when you eventually do loose control using summer tyres on actual winter roads...
3
It's that middle ground complacency and familiarity that kills most experienced drivers in conjunction with tiredness.

+mrdojob six months after I got my license having only driven MT I got to borrow the AT volvo V70 of my then gf's parents. It became quite the bumpy ride for a while as I was so used to manual I tried to use the clutch which of course wasn't there... while the gigantic brake pedal was there... XD Imo, the problems happen when you go from one type to the other when very used to one of them. I love my MT Hyundai i30 turbo crdi. Only trouble with it is that she took a beating from bad fuel from OKQ8 that had too much bio additives in it and caused algae gelling in the fuel system, blocking both fuel filter and injection pump :( Since then she has occational hickups that kicks her out of cruise control when I use it.

@Bill_Woo yup.
2
@chrisej5987 those would be even more fuel consuminh as they have lower machining tolerances and, as muscle cars, a vastly larger cylinder volume afaik.

@engrammi as a professional taxi driver, I totally agree with you! One feature I really like on my company's newest volvo v90 taxi is the blind spot warning light in the rear view mirror that lights up if there's an object in that zone! I don't like the adaptive part of the cruise control though... as the car has an automatic gearbox. Example: If I activate the cruise control on a 100kph 2+1 lane main road and come up on a heavy vehicle that's restricted to drive at 80kph, the cruise control adapts to it at 80kph, the 100kph main road comes up to a town and drops to 70kph followed by 40kph, the truck keeps going in front of me and the cruise control adapts even further.... The road reaches a scool zone at 30kph across the road from a supermarket, the cruise control adapts, but then the truck turns from the main road towards the supermarket as that's where it was headed while I'm headed further down the road and suddenly, there's no longer a slow obstacle to adapt to and the cruise control would immediately start accellerating the car to the 100kph preset in the middle of the school zone! (As a professional driver I naturally turn the cruise control off as soon as the main road speed limit drops to 70, but an old or inexperienced or tired driver might not think about that or be ignorant to how that specific function works)

Skynet sees you

It's also possible to use a traction control system to turn the car in a slope as if you were driving a tank with counter rotating track capacity! Also, I don't trust 4wd on local winter roads that often has small spots of black ice that makes you loose traction on one tyre/axle at a time, and with some slush or rain on top of that black ice, the anti-spin system is too slow to react and instead induces and reinforces a swaying that will turn into a full on spin if the driver as much as touches the brakes...
2
@HCkev the fuel pump itself could be a quick change module. That said, I'd make the fuel tank into the preassure tank and let the preassure the tank applied to keep most of it liquid and the engine use the gas as it evaporates to the preasure drop created when that gas is allowed to expand into the fuel lines feeding the engine.

my basic plan on buying tyres when I need to replace mine is to go for the tyres that won or came top three in most tyre tests for the respective season the year before.

Bill fred triggered much?
1
Bill fred Ah, yes, because not strutting around like a pretentious, narcissistic asshat with delusions of excellence like you do obviously means I can't drive XD You know what, Bill, you are one pretty special snowflake ^.-
1
And to a scandinavian, there is a distinct lack of metal studs on that "winter" tyre XD
1
FCFordLord Well, that's their choise, I don't understand the line of thought behind an outright ban but I don't trust studless Winter tyres as much as tyres with, so I'll drive on studs as long as I'm legally allowed to in my country.
1
+cerberus65 most people have two sets over here, lazy or inexperinced people use all seasons tyres. Also, almost every town has at least one car service shop that offers tyre switching and storage for the off season set as a premium service.
1
Same here in Sweden, also, especially on Gotland and in Skåne, where the snow is usually wet and turns to slush over daytime only to freeze over overnight so you get slush that eliminates the snow-on-snow friction studless tyres rely on and some nice polished ice underneath the slush, studded tyres is a no brainer despite the high wear on both tyres and the mostly bare roads. I also find studded tyres to be more reliable when ramming through low snow drifts which happens as soon as the snow is cold enough to fall dry, and that usually comes with strong winds over the open landscape causing the snow to gather wherever the roads cut through the crest or slope of a ridge, around solitary trees etc.

I got me a set of nokian hakkapelita 7 this year as my old set was almost done with only 69-70% studs left and after 5 seasons, the rubber of them might be getting old and brittle. So I figured it was best to replace them with some better quality tyres.
1
Umm, you are just required to submit the new builds road properties to the vehicle registration authorities and get it processed and aproved into the vehicle registration certificate and update the insurance before you get to take it on the road. TL:DR It's perfectly legal to mod a car almost as much as you might want in most European countries, you just have to make sure the proper authorities are updated and ok with the new performance before you go on public roads.
1
No, because the wide tyres actually might cause a water film to form from ground preassure faster than the film can be dispersed through the tyre patterns compared to a narrow tyre and thus turn you into driving a bambi on ice...
1
@Beard Guy101 and crash you into a semi-trailer big rig by beeing distracted....
1
@acebuttwice is that an engine burn-out I smell? XD Seriously though, back in the middle of the Russian winter of '42, millions of germans warmed up their vehicles by lighting actual campfires under them for about an hour before dawn... And they still got a well deserved can of whoop-ass handed to them every day after until the spring of '45.
1
It is legally required in most of northern Europe since winter tyres became a thing some time in the 1960'ies, along with mandatory seat belt usage.
1
Lol! My experience is that as long as you disable the anti-spin, a front wheel driven car can crawl or spin it's way through most slippery stand-stills, even in slopes.
1
@colinscutt5104 to be fair, most old Volvos might sound like a tractor, weigh like a tractor and have the crash durability of a tractor, but it really isn't a tractor when it comes to load pulling unless it's a Volvo BM 6x6 all terrain dumper truck, because those things can get anywhere that there's a point going, and they have a generous range of variants, from the standard ore hauler, through logging processor, to self propelled armored 155mm self loading howitzer...
1
Those prices cause empathic pain in my wallet, and the closest I've been to driving a Porche is driving a 5-door VW Golf taxi... And are the coated brakes availiable as an upgrade for the Porsche Sd.Kfz.184? (Asking for some friends)
1
Chris Perez and that's why I prefer spending my money on serious bacon instead of a seriously expensive car that I won't have the time to drive around as much as it deserves anyway.
1
So it's essentially the same setup as Gillette Razors and blade refills?
1
@CLP you can probably get whatever tyres you want through the tesla dealership, but seriously, do you think the car manufacturers make their own tires? They don't. They do make the rims, then they have a primary tyre contractor that supply the tyres for each car that leaves the production line. After that, it's up to the client where and what brand of replacements to get when that first set is worn out.

Greetings from Scandinavia, pro tip: If your car shows inner temp in°C, ~17-19°C is comfy in high summer heat, ~21-24°C is comfy in sub freezing temps of winter.

@ProjectExMachina and then 100-0 in 0.02sec ;)

Cham Rav and for european armed forces who has width restrictions from terrain, tunnels and medieval city streets that exclude humvees and can't abide brittish land rovers ;)
