  1. All intercepts have to start with those assumptions... that's why they send other jets to greet them. When the two Russian jets arrived... first they know the drone was in international territory and secondly, they could clearly see the drone was NOT armed! If it was armed, they might not have done what they did!

  3. US fighter jets faced and fought Russian fighter jets for decades now... America's record against Russian jets is far more than 1 to 1!!! Hence the reason more nations fly American fighter jets than Russian jets!!!

The balloon was tracked long before it entered US airspace... but the US wanted the balloon so it allowed it to transverse the US so it could be shot-down in shallow warm waters on the other side of the country. Where it entered from the upper Northern part of the country, the waters are freezing and deep and recovery would be far more difficult. Why the US used an expensive missile to shoot it down... I don't know why; I would like to know also. The spy-balloon carried multiple antennas to intercept ground-based communications systems, something a satellite couldn't do.
