  1. Well, Napoleon the third had good reason to believe that they would be receiving parts of Louisiana in exchange for gold and silver to support the Confederate war effort. Judah P Benjamin, a Cabinet member in the confederate government went to England, France, and Spain... they all gave him money to support the Confederate war effort. All three countries were promised Southwest, Western, and Northwestern territories after the war by the Confederacy. I would even say that if it weren't for the gold and silver given to the Confederacy by all three European nations the Civil War never would have happened.
