I remember reading an article years ago from one of the original AIDS researchers, maybe heard of him, Dr. Anthony Fauci? He basically said that viruses like HIV have basically been around for maybe hundreds of years. Travel like jet airplanes have made the world a smaller place, and made it easier for viruses to mutate quicker through contact with large population centers.

@donna25871 Just look at history, whenever there was a new trade route, like the Silk Road, the unintended consequence was a plague. These viruses and bacteria were isolated to certain regions of the world but once traveling merchants introduced these diseases to a new population center they evolved or mutated rapidly.
