I hate how pop science glorifies one person and ignores co-inventors and people who did the foundational work

There's too much temptation to reduce innovation to the work of one genius. That's simply not how it works anymore. The Nobel Committee makes this mistake constantly. Nakamura did not invent the GaN blue LED. He make the first efficient, bright one. A massive achievement, but one that would never have happened without the foundational work at RCA where the first blue LED of magnesium-doped GaN was created by Herb Maruska and his colleagues, or Theodore Moustakas who actually invented the buffer-layer process but was snubbed by the Nobel Committee.

He didn't do it single-handedly. Herb Maruska at RCA had a GaN blue LED in the 70s, albeit dim. Theodore Moustakas invented the buffer-layer process and the Nobel Committee never credited him.
