@ThePathOfEudaimonia There's an insane amount of hype right now because of ChatGPT. GPT is about five years old, and generative AI is older. It's not esoteric knowledge, its statistics. Generative models are a statistics concept from decades ago. Much of the basis of these sophisticated guessing machines is at least 50 years old.

@Cheddar You don't understand it until you can build it without the guessing machine. Plus there's a difference between a starter app a twelve year old could make and a real software system with real requirements. Web dev will probably become easy though. Of course it's easy without AI. If white collar jobs are actually eliminated, there will be so much human competition in the trades that the skills will then fetch a very low price. This is long before robots take over.

@Cheddar Mostly people who aren't in the industry. It will be a bloodbath for entry level positions. But obviously with all the FUD going around, plenty of people will go into trades. Remember, your job isn't hard. It's just hard work. Goodbye to plummers making six figures.

@Cheddar The same is how I feel about the period of extremely high software salaries. I benefited from it but more than likely they will drop for most. The entry level positions will one day be correcting output from the machine learning tools. This could create more problems than it solves for software quality. The same way high level languages created devs who don't know about deep tech, AI will create devs who know even less. Fields like cybersecurity will be more in demand. Nobody really knows for sure.

@beaconing7689 Maybe for people who write little React apps and scripts.
