Battleground of the Cold War especially in the 60s and 70s with hundreds of deaths from terrorism sponsored by CIA), I do understand the situation in Serbia 😢 I also know very well how it was possible for Italy to have "economic miracles" in the 60s and early 90s. We traded our freedom and values for money. Thats the Italian way. And do not be fooled, we are not "friends" of the USA. Both our people and most politicians (on the left, center and right) hate the American government no matter who is in power. We play all fields: USA, Russia, China. Since Meloni, it has been the lowest in history. Yes, I know, coalition 😂 3 parties with opposite ideas of the very concept of Italy: central power (Meloni) vs local power (Lega). How is that going to work? Spoiler: it will not. Also, most of Meloni's voters are very disappointed because she has done the opposite of what she said she would 😂

Yeah, I read your ancestors were from Caltanissetta. I am from Padova, so to me Sicily is like another country. Most of Sicilians would agree. You should know Italy is very divided, not only North vs South (and Sicily and Sardegna are different than the mainland), but every single region has a different culture. I have relatives in Puglia. Beautiful region, very different culture than Veneto. Veneto is alot closer to Germany, Piemonte is a lot closer to France, than both are to Sicily.

And remember that Meloni only had the vote of 15% of Italians in the latest elections, because half of the country didnt vote AT ALL. We never had such a low partecipation in past elections. Orban is only liked by Meloni and her party. We managed to get Ilaria Salis out of that backward country with a huge amount of votes. Italians saw the barbaric treatment of an Italian citzen in an Hungarian prison without even a trial. Orban wants to turn back progress in Europe and should be kicked out of the EU before he ruins it.

It is not just immigration policies, it is everything. Btw, I am not at all against immigration, in Italy we have shortage of workers in many fields and an aging population. We NEED immigrants. But of course I think we need rules. I do not want the EU to become the "wild west" of Western movies either. But Italy has a huge coastline, how do you control such porous borders?? What do you do with boats full of people coming to your land? We can not let them die in the Mediterranean either. Maybe we should help their countries instead of bombing them (like our "ally" the USA does), stealing their resourses, interfere in their politics etc.

They just change the coalitions. This was especially true from post WWII till early 90s. It seemed from outside we were always changing government, but in reality it was always the same people.

Right now, we 'imported" HUNDREDS of doctors from CUBA to work in hospitals in South Italy because we have a shortage of doctors, and Cuba has too many. Russia also sent doctors during our Covid crisis. Socialism 101 teaches that an educated population is the basis for a good society. Especially education of women. Education in the USA is of very poor quality. You have many good Universities, but generally, those are for rich people. But up until highschool, the education is terrible. You do not even study philosophy. Without philosophy, people grow up without critical thinking. Thats why so many Americans are attracted by cults of all sorts.   90. Women are more educated about pregnancy and childbirth now, and they know they are both horrible. They cause temporary and permanent health problems, they ruin your body, make you older, kill braincells, cause depression, anxiety and worse, often ruin your sex life, increase your risk of dying both because of complications and because of murder (yes, pregnant women are much more at risk of being killed by their husbands/partners than non pregnant women), half of them become incontinent, often for LIFE... and on and on and on. There is not enough money in the world that makes pregnancy and childbirth worth it. Add the facts that 1) your child may be born with disabilities so serious that you will have to look after him/her their whole life and 2) if your marriage/relationship ends, even if you divorce, your partner will always be in your life to co-parent. Immagine if you divorced because of an abusive partner. If you have a child together, you will never get rid of him. And there are dozens more reasons for a woman not to have a child. I forgot one: 90% of the time it is the mother who takes care of the child, the house, and everything. Fathers rarely help. So really, why SHOULD a woman have a child? I hope they finally start to use artificial wombs so that women are finally free from this barbaric practice. And also men can raise their kids by themselves if they want kids. Lets see how it goes 😂

I was treated well and had a good time, because I was with progressive people, and, lets be honest, I was a pretty, white young woman guest of 2 wealthy families (I am not rich myself). But as an ex journalist and activist, I could not unsee the violence, poverty, racism, unjustice, religious extremism, ignorance, bigotry, the awful "purity culture", the awful approach to drug addicts (treated as criminals and not people with a health problem), etc. I know Europe (and my country, Italy), has many problems, but most people in Europe agree that life is just better in Europe than the USA. In the USA, I could only afford the doctor because my host family and my bf were rich. In Florida, people thought I was weird just because I wanted to go for a walk alone at night. They told me it was too dangerous. In the USA I saw no public transport. American highschool was terrible, like going to kindergarden. The decent food was expensive. The cities were ugly and all looked the same. People know nothing about politics, philosophy, history, geography, the arts etc. I was interrogated at the airport for 2 hours because I was a MUSIC writer for an Italian left newspaper. I said "communist" and they panicked 😂 I forgot for a moment that "communism" and "socialism" are crimes in America 😂 while they are perfectly fine political positions in Europe. The American propaganda machine is worse than the Russian one. I also found both Missouri and Florida to be more sexist than Italy, which is a very low bar. The American bf wanted to marry me, his family was ready with the papers for me to move to Orlando. I took a plane home asap and broke up with the guy. Besides all the stuff I mentioned, I could never live in a country that is at war all the time and is responsable for millions of deaths around the world. The Italian constitution, written right after WWII, says that Italy rejects war. That's why we are not giving offensive weapons to Ukraine. We are also not friends with the rogue country committing war crimes since last october. Is that enough reasons to hate the USA? Oh wait, here is another one: American military bases occupying our country since post WWII. Intefering in OUR politics with (failed, lucky us) coups, CIA-sponsored terrorism, propaganda, assassinations etc. I could go on all night.

It's been a mess in the region after the fall of Yugoslavia. Same with Lybia, which had the best living standards in the region under Gaddafi and look at it now. Of course I could have been an activist in Yugoslavia and Lybia, they both were socialist countries and I am a socialist (see European communism).

  106.  @eddiecalderone the USA and the UK were never against nazifascism. They liked both Mussolini and Hitler before the war. Hitler himself was inspired by the USA and UK (genocide of native Americans, colonialism, eugenics etc). A lot of Nazi scientists were saved by the USA to work for NASA for example. The USA and the UK were forced to intervene in the war, they won (they used the Left resistance movements in Italy and other countries, then tried to crush them after the war), and then wrote themselves in history books into heroes that saved the world from fascism. I know that in the USA they dont even mention Russia's huge role in defeating the Nazis. Nor the important role of Communist/ Socialist resistance. As an Italian, I have nothing to thank the USA for.

  107.  @eddiecalderone  yeah, because it is not MY view, it's just history. And most Italians who are in London are educated young people, so I expect them to know history. Btw, London is my favorite city to visit, I have been there many, many times. I would not live there because it is too expensive, but it has a place in my heart. And I know many Brits who live in Italy. They are totally different than Americans.

Everywhere in the world there is a minority who wants to make money exploiting labor. We can find racists, supremacists, ultranationalists, etc. in every country. There is even a tiny minority in Italy who would like to bring back the monarchy. Yugoslavia was keeping all the ethnicities together under one flag. It was keeping economic inequities in check. Most citzens were better off.

Education of the population is certainly one of them. I mean, MAGA people. Project 2025 is scary for women. The new EU government has about 40% of women, many from progressive parties. Nothing like Project 2025 is on our steps. Just the fact that Project 2025 is out in the open before elections tells alot about the state of American politics. That would be a political suicide in Europe. Do Americans even know about it before they vote??

I have never met an immigrant in Italy who did not speak at least 3 languages. Immigrants from Tunisia and Albania learned Italian thru RAI, our state TV that somehow reached their countries. Alot of immigrants are even fluid in italian regional languages (which are called "dialects", even thou many of them are proper languages and very different from italian). I am pretty sure if we test italians and immigrants, italians will NOT come out very well from the comparison 😂 especially those from some Southern regions...
