I am European and I really do not understand the American idea of "free speech". Hate speech is NOT free speech in Europe.

@gillb9222 I have lived in the UK for two years. All the Brits I met were very nice and polite. I never heard anyone using racist, sexist, homophobic etc language there. Maybe I was just lucky.

@timwarcloud My father had a Lenin bust on his desktop, and wrote a thesis about the French Revolution. I have the same political leaning as my father.

@LoreTheDarkElf I went to the USA as an exchange student in 1992-93. The disrespect American students had for teachers was shocking to me. I have heard many American parents saying Italian children are not "wild" like American children. I guess it's because here in Italy how your children behave reflects on you (parent), so if your child behaves like a wild animal, people will judge the parents. Us Italians are very judgy on manners, looks, etiquette etc. That's why you will never see Italian people going to stores in pjs or wet hair either. You can say we are "superficial", but that's just how we are raised here. I am childfree btw.

@DisposableSupervillainHenchman no it's not. We all know what hate speech is in Europe and what free speech is. Do you remember the silence after JD Vance's speech in Munich? It was because we all agree in Europe that our idea of free speech is different than Americans' idea. There is no confusion for us. If you have nothing nice to say, keep your mouth shut. Of course we are free to criticize anyone, but not to insult, lie, or promote violence. Especially not towards minorities or the most vulnerable people. Insulting the government is okay, because they are more powerful than us. Insulting the disabled, children, trans people etc is NOT okay, because they are the most vulnerable people in society.
