He was a politician. I am an Italian freelance journalist and that is what I call him too.

@fatalconceit3362 the Italian army is rn the secord or third best in Europe (depends if you include the UK or not). All fonts say it is so. But it is, by our Constitution, a DEFENCE FORCE. Our Constitution does not permit any war, only self-defense. So our soldiers are used in UN peace-keeping missions, they are training the Palestinian Police and stuff like that. I hope they will never be called to serve in an actual war. Italians are very anti-war.

@fatalconceit3362 what do you mean our army is purely "ceremonial"? No, I dont think so. With UNIFIL in Lebanon they assist civilians in many different ways. I learned they also work like fire-fighters there. They do diplomacy work. They build infrastructures for civilians. I know locals accepted the presence of UNIFIL in Lebanon only if Italians were in charge. They trust us more than the French and the American. I think that says alot.

@fatalconceit3362 the Italian Army will be sent where it is needed, usually for UN or Nato operations. Again, our Constitution is against the war, so they can only act in self defence or as peace-keepers. In the past days the Italian UNIFIL soldiers in Lebanon have been repetately targeted by the IOF, which is a war crime. Fortunately no one has been killed, but they are not moving from there. So this is a case in which they are used in an area where they are being targeted and killed. Why do you think this nonsense? Where does it come from?

@fatalconceit3362 the Egyptian army? 😂 Italy is #10 in the world, Egypt #15. We also have better Allies. There is no comparison, sorry.

@fatalconceit3362 Italy is not at war with any nation. So I do not understand why you think our army is "ceremonial". If we will ever be at war, obviously it will be used and sent in area of combact. It's their job. I am very confused by your question.

@fatalconceit3362 Oriana Fallaci is a hateful woman and a disgrace. I have nothing more to say.

@fatalconceit3362 Yeah, I know you guys "make fun" of us Southern Europeans (I am actually a Northern Italian with French and British ancestors, so I am neither Nordic nor Mediterranean I guess). I, on the other hand, have much respect for the Spanish and Greek people, and zero respect for NATO. Many Italians want to get the f out of NATO. So we have nothing in common. Ciao.

@fatalconceit3362 you think that being against wars is EMBARASSING? I would be embarassed to be an American, knowing all the evil things the American army does all around the world. Maybe I need to explain this to you AGAIN: the Italian Constitution was written by our partisans right after the tragedy that was WWII. We did not want anything like that to happen again. So our Constitution says: "l'Italia ripudia la guerra". Our army is only for defence, peace-keeping and humanitarian missions. We prefer diplomacy and are very good at it. I am proud of that. Countries that use wars instead of diplomacy should be ASHAMED. Not us. Your world view is twisted and disgusting. Italy has no enemies. Countries like the USA and Israhell are hated all over the world. Why would we want to be hated? "Ceremonial" means they do not do anything. They do a lot, they just do not start wars all over the world. And to you that is a bad thing? I rather not have an Italian army at all. Just a united European defence army. Us Europeans have evolved beyond war, beyond religion, and I hope we will evolve beyond capitalism too. We are nothing like the USA. We want to be friends with Russia and China too. They are not enemies to us. We despise the American way.
