I hear you for sure. In my own job, I actually applied to 50 internal jobs and all were rejected and then my boss encouraged me to apply to one using him as a referral, again they rejected me. The system right now is so messed up it’s. It even funny. At this point I expect a rejecting, but your absolutely right they can’t take away someone’s skills that you have done on your own time coding and reject you because you didn’t work in a professional setting. Sometimes I think these recruiters try and come up with reasons that make no sense. I was also told at my company to get a mentor, and I searched around found a few people in their program, and none of them responded back to me but they responded back to other workers, so I’m afraid there is horrible favoritism within companies and it’s the same with recruiters they are highly bias. I’ve interviewed, I’ve taken their tests for math, reading comprehension, logic etc passed them and still got rejected for the job. I personally stopped applying for internal jobs because I was jerked around too many times even though my skills, education and profile, fit the ideal candidate, they still rejected 🙅♂️ me. I’m afraid at companies that there is extreme favoritism, and nepotism and if your not liked or if your not in their club or clique at work, you won’t get advancement or even a better job. It’s like the lottery, or a roll of the dice 🎲
