I remember my grandpa 👴 telling me when he was alive growing up in Lambeth, that both his grandparents lived in workhouses and it was brutal during Victorian times. Often times my grandpa’s grandpa was trying to make money as a carman and his wife was a domestic servant and when there wasn’t work they lived in the workhouses and when they worked they lived with families or friends to share in the rent as it was expensive for them in London. I traced by my grandpa’s dad my great grandfather and he was decapitated by a draw bridge somewhere in London. Back then if you didn’t have the money to bury you family they would be buried in an unmarked grave. I don’t know how the hell they dealt with the high poverty and how they would get their next meal. 🍽️
