I’m from Edinburgh. Most of the centre of the city has been retained, architecturally-speaking, but my God, did they ruin Princes Street. Just a couple of decades after this was filmed they bulldozed a good chunk of this once-glorious street (particularly the most Western/Central bits) and built utter crud. The biggest stain is that brutal, horrendous grey scar at the bottom of the Mound. Wtf were they thinking? It’s like Grotbags the witch just pitched up at the Miss World pageant.🤦‍♂️ They bulldoze glorious old classic Edinburgh sandstone stuff (beautifully modelled on Venetian palaces) and built something that wouldn’t look out of place in the grottiest bit of downtown Bucharest! Further West and there’s more pointless destruction and replacing it with architecture just not in keeping with most of the rest of the city. The commercial imperative probably. Whatever it is/was, beginning about 1960, they ruined what was once the centrepiece jewel in Edinburgh’s crown. All that remains is to stand on Princes Street, turn your back on the scabby shops, grim 60s/70s/80s architecture and gum-spattered pavements and drink in the Castle and view of the Old Town to the left.

@twiddlerat9920 Actually, Glasgow, for all its knockers has retained much of its glorious old Victorian architecture in the centre. And that red sandstone colour is quite lovely. Don’t see that lovely shade in Edinburgh, so much. Old Cally hotel probably being most famous example. It’s quite beautiful in a less stated way than Edinburgh (partly due to Edinburgh’s magnificent natural setting). Glasgow also has the disadvantage of more wartime damage. They also razed hundreds of glorious old tenements in the 50s/60s (unique Scottish tenements you wouldn’t find anywhere else on the planet and what gives/gave the place its character) and built shoddy, horrendous, high-rise carbuncles that could be anywhere. On the plus side, they left Glasgow’s beautiful West end alone and the university is easily one of Britain’s stand alone most beautiful buildings. Fire took Rennie Mackintosh’s stunning art school, alas. Twice. All told though, I rate Glasgow as one of the most handsome of UK cities; for me it ranks above the likes of, say, Newcastle, Manchester and Liverpool, its northern English equivalents.

@pwimbledon Indeed. They are all talking as if it’s more or less the same as it was before about 1960. It’s infinitely inferior architecturally due to wanton, commercially-driven destruction.

@ I was focusing more on all the old glorious Victorian architecture. Litter is a different matter. The density of handsome architecture is extensive in the centre of the city.

@iainpringle9993 Yup! And also the view from the top of Castle Terrace. You stroll down from the castle, look left and there it is. That grey, monstrous carbuncle. Is it Castle Terrace? That really steep street leading up to the castle.

@minixtvbox That concrete stuff was way pre-Thatcher/Blair. They were knocking down beauty and building concrete crud in the 1960s. See the horrendous grey carbuncle at the bottom of the Mound and Google what was there before. They also took out a good bit of beautiful George Square to build the university complex back then. David Hume Tower, Appleton building etc. All horrendous. Nothing but glorious old Reekie razed to make way for them.
