@daledelatte9607 Not quite true. I’m totally against what Putin’s doing, but a big part of why he’s doing it is it’s a custody battle in geopolitical terms: a majority of Ukrainians look west, and Putin knows this, and a NATO with Ukraine in it increases Russia’s vulnerability drastically. It’s akin to Mexico allowing Putin to install weapons on the border with the USA. USA would feel threatened, and with good cause. I repeat, however, that Putin is just an arsehole and wrong to invade a self-governing sovereign territory, no matter how insecure he might feel about Ukraine’s status vis-a-vis NATO and the west.

The double standards of the West in this conflict are staggering. America, along with its partners, has the most prolific record of any country on this planet in terms of actual invasion and/or the overturning of democratically elected governments. What Russia is doing, invading another self-governing, sovereign nation, is wrong, but what about the dozens of times the West has done this? In the last 40 years alone America’s record is: 1. Grenada (1983-1984) 2. Bolivia (1986) 3. Virgin Islands (1989) 4. Liberia (1990; 1997; 2003) 5. Saudi Arabia (1990-1991) 6. Kuwait (1991) 7. Somalia (1992-1994; 2006) 8. Bosnia (1993-) 9. Zaire/Congo (1996-1997) 10. Albania (1997) 11. Sudan (1998) 12. Afghanistan (1998; 2001-) 13. Yemen (2000; 2002-) 14. Macedonia (2001) 15. Colombia (2002-) 16 Pakistan (2005-) 17. Angola (1976-1992) As far as I can see what Putin and Russia are doing is playing the most commonly-heard tune in the West’s geopolitical songbook.

@kevin6293 Wtf are you on about? I’m standing here apolitical, agnostic, anational, calling this from the sidelines as I see it. Putin, rightly or wrongly (I say wrongly), is acting in his, and Russia’s best self-interest, as he sees it. I happen to think he’s half-crazed but within that madness there is method and you need to try harder here and you might spot some of that method, too. The ‘whataboutism’ accusation is just a lazy trope unthinking people chuck around when they can’t coherently construct an argument.

@user-jp2vy2wv2l The first bit I agree with. The second bit is inadmissible if a majority of Ukrainians want to be an independent, self-governing, sovereign state. It seems they do. What’s more, a majority look west and not north to Russia. You need to consider this before stating crap that ain’t true.

If we made it a non-negotiable condition of engagement, that every person, despot or otherwise, declaring an aggressive war, had to serve on the front line of declared war, I’m willing to bet this would go a good way to reducing the phenomenon of war on this planet. 🤔

Before ‘human being’, first and foremost, we seem to want to put this or that random accident of birth, or this or that imagined daddy in the sky. Individually, this is not an issue. However, when we band together with others on the basis of random accidents of birth and imagined daddies in the sky, the trouble starts. Nietzsche looked at this in the eye and called it: In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule. With an outlier like Putin, we need to develop a workable system of removing such dictators from positions of power. In the kindergarten, the staff don’t allow a single bully to ride roughshod over others as whim dictates. Why, then, do we allow this as adults? As to you, Kev, you are an accident of birth, born somewhere. You could have been born anywhere, so why are you taking unearned credit just because your mother plopped you out here and not over there? Huh? You seem to limit what you are. @kevin6293 The invasion of Kuwait led to a United Nations Security Council embargo and sanctions on Iraq and a U.S.-led coalition air and ground war, which began on January 16, 1991, and ended with an Iraqi defeat and retreat from Kuwait on February 28, 1991. You might need to invest in some better history books, Kev.😉

@Tube2097 Well said. Too many folks here can’t seem to see that to Putin, having Ukraine in NATO is akin to America having Russian missiles pointing at it from Mexico. I disagree with everything Putin is doing here, but it’s important we try to understand his motives, beyond the lazy tropes about him being Vlad the Mad etc.
