  2. Economic Gain. Territorial Gain. Religion. Nationalism. Revenge. Civil War. Revolutionary War. Defensive War. Of the 8 main commonly-agreed upon reasons for war, I was curious as to how many of these may apply to Putin. Economic gain? Check. Territorial gain? Big check. Religion? Not so much, if at all. Nationalism? Oh yes. Revenge? After 1989 and the USSR’s defeat? Are you kidding me!? Civil War? Interesting one. As they are all Slavs then there is a strong element of this. By the way, ‘Civil War’ has to be the most egregious oxymoron ever invented by humanity. Revolutionary War? Well, maybe in the sense Putin wants Ukraine to look primarily to him and a Greater Russia. Defensive War? Indirectly, perhaps. A defence against the creeping encroachments of NATO. However, there appears to be a ninth cause here: one man so engorged and drunk with power that it’s addled his reasoning and critical faculties somewhat. Ultimately, the main cause of this war could just be an evil bastard. 👿
