  1. Bayonne is a delight. Give me the gorgeous colours and old buildings of its Vieille Ville over its, ostensibly, flashier (but really just underwhelming on closer inspection) neighbour, Biarritz. The real ritziness, for me, is in the unassuming, French-Basque capital. Its streets are eminently strollable. Unlike Biarritz, its visual appeal is charming and interesting. Sure, it doesn’t have Biarritz’s fabled plage, but who cares, when you have 2 rivers for the price of one (Nive; Adour) converging in Bayonne. Ultimately, the clincher for me is Bayonne feels like it has more soul. Biarritz may be good for a throwaway summer fling, but Bayonne is the keeper.
