I was brought up in the Christian tradition but I never use the label ‘Christian’ to self-identify, as I’m agnostic. It’s naive in the extreme to conclude that there isn’t a quite considerable religious background stoking this whole fire.

  5.  @Ashleii  Are you blind, mate? You just stated they ‘attacked a Muslim’. You didn’t state, they attacked an agnostic, or an atheist or a pantheist. Moreover, who were ‘they’? They weren’t Scientologists, or Jews, or Buddhists, they were Hindus. This is quite clearly rooted in a Muslim/Hindu religio-cultural milieu and to deny this is to be blatantly playing fast and loose with the evidence.

  13.  @HOLLASOUNDS  Not sure the war ‘is going as Putin intended’ given the quite bad losses on the Russian side. Moreover, it looks like his fourth-rate, unmotivated army is going to have an issue keeping Ukraine if and when they take the country. Putin has been a one man party for 22 years such that literally no one near him has been able to say ‘no’, and those who do, get divorced (just ask his ex-wife). While the west isn’t totally free of culpability here, Putin, for me, exemplifies the dictum: power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely . Putin’s mind has been addled as it hasn’t had a healthy challenge to it with fresh ideas for 22 years. Also, a large part of what he’s doing here is simply belated cold revenge for the USSR’s loss in the Cold War. Quite frankly, I’m surprised it has taken him this long to actually move on Ukraine after the initial move in 2014, and very likely the ex-USSR Baltic states will be next if he gets his way in Ukraine.

There are about 1 million Palestinians 16 and under who didn’t vote for Hamas back in 2006. Even if they did, I would still be in favour of humanitarian aid in this case, no questions asked.

I really don’t, and if I did, I probably wouldn’t visit Israel. I remember how it was in 1948 when Israel was being established and all my Jewish friends were ecstatic. I was not. I said: what are we doing? We are establishing ourselves in a ghetto, in a small corner of a vast Muslim sea. The Muslims will never forget nor forgive, and Israel, as long as it exists, will be embattled. I was laughed at, but I was right. I can’t help but feel that the Jews didn’t really have the right to appropriate a territory only because 2000 years ago, people they consider their ancestors, were living there. Personally, if any country is going to have mass immigration, then for me, this is a referendum issue and should be put to the people. After all, a large proportion of those who voted for Brexit did it in order to stem the flow of immigrants into the UK, telling us that this is a very live issue, and large enough to be put directly to the populace.

  43. Wouldn’t surprise me if Putin consolidated his gains in eastern Ukraine in the coming days and having done this, sit opposite Zelensky at a table to thrash out his 5 main demands: 1. Neutralised Ukraine and Ukraine not seeking NATO membership. 2. Ukraine disarmed. 3. Protection for Russian language in east Ukraine. 4. DeNazification of Ukraine. 5. Crimea, along with most of eastern Ukraine east of Dnieper river recognised as Russian. If I were Ukraine I’d seriously consider these terms. It seems that as long as Putin is around he won’t back down on these demands, so either this war continues and Ukraine is utterly destroyed, along with a substantial portion of its people, or Ukraine sues for peace along these aforementioned lines.

Your waffle above is all very well, but you blithely ignore the democratic will of the people in your diatribe. The exact selfsame thing Putin has been doing for 22 years in Russia; and the exact selfsame thing he’s doing in Ukraine. He misjudged the Ukrainian mood horrendously and he’ll eventually pay the price for his hubristic arrogance.
