Yes, you can get rid of those who currently loathe you, but you can’t get rid of the ideas that motivated these individuals in the first place and these will just be passed like a baton to the next generation. The amount of bad karmic seeds Israel has sown these past 5 months will torment it for decades to come. As this nightmare continues well into a 2nd month (and who knows how many more months after that), Israel should be surprised by none of what happened on October 7th, in much the same way Palestinians should be surprised by none of Israel’s response. Of course, what Hamas did was the definition of evil but it was hardly unpredictable. I genuinely don’t particularly support any side here (lapsed Catholic agnostic), but what can be observed (by any impartial neutral) is a 75-year-long ongoing fight whereby one side has been throwing its weight around considerably more than the other side (if the year on year casualty figures are anything to go by), yet when the other side finds the capability to strike back, the opponent is somehow surprised, as if that were just not cricket, old boy! Last time I checked, in a boxing match both sides are allowed to throw punches. In these kinds of seemingly intractable situations, I always flip it: how would the Israelis feel if the boot were on the other foot and it was they who were living in the conditions the average Palestinian is (and has been for decades) living in? They’d be fighting back. Fighting for dignity and freedom. A 2-state solution is the only way here. Of course, with this, the nitty-gritty will be who gets custody of the car and who gets custody of the cat.

What I don’t get is that this body was found 1 mile from the bench where Nicola’s phone was found. Mr Faulding, the sonar guy, told us: “It can generally cover about 10 miles of river a day” . I know the search was fairly close to the bench, but given they can cover 10 miles in a day and they searched for 3 full days, it would be the height of negligence not to have covered the area the body was found.

A sure way to tell the real refugees from those just here for economic reasons, is the real asylum seekers would accept a warm bed, food, shelter and safety without complaint if they were genuinely fleeing life-threatening persecution/war. If you’re an illegal economic migrant, you can go; if you’re a genuine refugee, you can stay; if you’re any one of these and complaining about the accommodation, as long as you are safe, have food, and have a bed, I have no sympathy.

  21. Support legal immigration here, as do the vast majority of people I’m aware of. However, for any given country there is clearly an optimum number. The UK optimum would probably be about 25-50,000 per year. If 750,000 legal immigrants arrive in the UK year-on-year (this figure taking absolutely no account of the tens of thousands of economic illegals who will be on the Channel boats), it won’t be long be long before the British electorate, rightly or wrongly, will be going the way of the Dutch and electing strongly rightest anti-immigration parties.

As someone neutral here, what Hamas did was heinous, barbaric and brutal but what Israel is doing to tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians is also heinous, barbaric and brutal. What seems a little bizarre throughout is the fact Israel appears to see itself as wholly innocent here and not culpable in any way at all. Nothing justifies what Hamas did but given 56 years of Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory it was hardly unpredictable.

  25. What’s confusing about this whole situation is that it’s possible to both condemn the Hamas attacks and think Israel has been more than heavy-handed in its response to October 7th. It’s possible to support Palestinian freedom from Israeli state oppression without being antisemitic just as it’s possible to support Israel against Islamist aggression without being anti-Muslim. These 2 things are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Too many folk are either/or in this conflict when it’s possible to be both/and.

If this dude hadn’t been wearing his kippah the copper wouldn’t have made the comment or even noticed him. In a way, the copper was actually trying to protect the dude from what he saw (rightly or wrongly) as potential aggression/violence towards him. The threat to arrest was totally out of order but my instinct is that this copper wasn’t being consciously (or even unconsciously) antisemitic.

  48. A big part of the problem with Islam is that, unlike current Christianity (and other faiths), it’s aggressive. If it embeds itself somewhere, it will want to call the shots. As an agnostic, I have zero time for all organised religion, but the one I least trust currently, is Islam, as it’s the only one that seems to demand most respect for its values, whilst simultaneously giving least respect for others’ values.

  50. Thing people often get mistaken is that the SNP is synonymous with Scottish independence; it is not. Yes, their raison d'être as a Party is independence, but even if the SNP vanished tomorrow, there would still be a steady 40-49% of Scots in favour of independence. I say this as a Scot who is an independence “agnostic” and undecided one way or t’other on the issue. My feeling is, however, that Scottish independence, like a united Ireland, is only a matter of time. It will happen, but perhaps not in the short/medium-term.
