  9. On the principal of ‘garbage in, garbage out’, if ‘most’ Russians in Russia support this war then that is just testament to the power of Putin’s propaganda machine. For all the west’s faults (and they are legion), any truly objective observer can see that life in America, or Britain, or France, or indeed Ukraine (leaving aside the intra-Ukrainian east/west tensions), is infinitely preferable to the relatively benighted existence the average Russian endures.

Now I don’t know about you Mark, but if humans through fossil-fuel burning activity are significantly contributing to the warming of the planet (as 99% of the scientific consensus is agreed upon), doesn’t it behove us to decrease this fossil fuel use? As I said, add another 3°, possibly 5° at this rate and by the end of the century you’re talking temperature norms of 55° in certain latitudes! Not to mention the huge sea-ice melt which is currently predicted to raise sea levels by at least a metre by 2100. I’m with you on technological solutions to human issues, but surely we can act a bit before we have to take these technological solutions and literally fry and drown huge swathes of this planet out of human liveable existence.

Someone suggested this whole thing is a New World Order thing and Zelensky is the NWO puppet and Putin, believe it or not, is the ‘good guy’ in all this! I tend to go with the theory that this is all the work of the USA. They want Russia subdued and then that may set up a confrontation with China for hegemony for the next 100 years or so. Assuming there will be any planet left after all that. It’s all very depressing, obviously, and the feelings of powerlessness in the average Joe are overwhelming, me included.

Putin’s an evil dickhead as far as I’m concerned, but from his point of view, I can totally see why he’s spooked. That said, he’s not justified going into Ukraine all guns blazing.

  22.  @sonnyfabula1446  I agree, to an extent. I feel more threatened by a Putin-led Russia than by the idea NATO would aggressively go for Russia in a first-strike hot war. However, in purely geographical, geopolitical terms, and looking at the map, I was simply pointing out how NATO has eaten into great swathes of territory formerly under direct Soviet Union rule. Knowing Putin nurses a grievance since 1989 after the USSR’s loss in the Cold War, helps understanding in what he might be doing here. That’s all. I’m not condoning what he’s doing; just trying to understand it.

  30.  @sam-jj4fm  Was just making the point in my OP that the reason for the lurch to the right in Europe is continued mass immigration. Now, I’ve repeatedly said here I’m pro controlled legal immigration. I have 2 main issues: the numbers (685,000 in the UK is agreed upon by parties left, right and centre to be too high); and Islam. Importing hundreds of millions of those with a credo diametrically opposed to western liberal democracy is surely a recipe for disaster in the future.

  39. Why can’t the politicians get this? Few people have any real problem with strictly controlled legal immigration. The problem arises when, for example, you’re importing 1%+ of your population year on year, as the UK has just done these past few years. How is that good for proper integration when you’re accepting that many in such a short space of time? Answer: it isn’t. It’s not racist to say this and it needs to be said: most people have no real problem with strictly controlled legal immigration. These same people are not as happy with millions pouring in year on year (as in the UK case). It feels like it’s planned. The reason for the rise of the populist political Parties in Western Europe and elsewhere, is exactly this. If you won’t listen…
