Wouldn’t surprise me if Putin consolidated his gains in eastern Ukraine in the coming days and having done this, sit opposite Zelensky at a table to thrash out his 5 main demands: 1. Neutralised Ukraine and Ukraine not seeking NATO membership. 2. Ukraine disarmed. 3. Protection for Russian language in east Ukraine. 4. DeNazification of Ukraine. 5. Crimea, along with most of eastern Ukraine east of Dnieper river recognised as Russian. If I were Ukraine I’d seriously consider these terms. It seems that as long as Putin is around he won’t back down on these demands, so either this war continues and Ukraine is utterly destroyed, along with a substantial portion of its people, or Ukraine sues for peace along these aforementioned lines.

@klchai7884 Last time I checked 13% of Taiwanese favoured reunification with China. Similarly, last time I checked about 25% of Ukrainians supported Russia over Ukraine. Your waffle above is all very well, but you blithely ignore the democratic will of the people in your diatribe. The exact selfsame thing Putin has been doing for 22 years in Russia; and the exact selfsame thing he’s doing in Ukraine. He misjudged the Ukrainian mood horrendously and he’ll eventually pay the price for his hubristic arrogance.

@theloki72 Yes, send Russia back to the Middle Ages (although it’s debatable that it isn’t already there), and create the dangerous conditions for another fascistic Putinesque figure to step into the breach as the nation’s ‘saviour’. The sooner Russia comes in from the cold and just adopts even a semblance of liberal democracy the better for them and the better for the rest of us.

@JamesC785 I think that’s slightly disingenuous. America, it seems, to maintain her hegemony, really does want Russia fucked. And the more I’ve looked at this war, the more I’m coming round to the idea that America is simply getting Ukraine to do her dirty work for her. If and when America needs to step in, Russia will be a mightily weakened bull at that point and all America will need to do is administer the final thrust. All the foregoing assumes the non-use of nuclear weapons; if they enter the equation, then all bets are off and that will probably be curtains for civilisation as we know it, Vladimir.
