What often gets lost in this debate over anti-Semitism is the important distinction between not digging the State of Israel and certain of its policies, and not having any particular issue whatsoever with Jews and Judaism itself. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been called an anti-Semite for simply voicing an opinion against Israel’s behaviour in certain regards. However, what Abbott wrote was, at best, insensitive and at worst deeply offensive.
