If these are genuine asylum seekers and not just illegal economic migrants chancing their arm I have no problem here and would have no problem with this if the base were right next to me. However, we (and Europe more generally) needs to seriously address the migration issue. I’m pro legal immigration and obviously pro helping out genuine asylum seekers. But we have borders in this world, for better or worse, and surely every country, every country has the right to determine exactly who and who it does not admit. In the same way that every home-owner has a right to decide who to let into their house, Europe has this same right. As far as I can tell, most (the vast majority in fact) of the incoming migrants to Europe are simply economic migrants and unless they have specific skills they can contribute to a given country’s economy or unless they are bona fide genuine refugees fleeing life-threatening war/persecution, a strong message should be sent out that the doors will be locked when they arrive at Europe’s house.

@khoyrulislam Uh huh. And I didn’t support the Western illegal invasion of Iraq. That still doesn’t negate anything I’ve said. Just cos I was randomly born in a country that invaded another country doesn’t make me complicit in that invasion.

@dondoodat Not a “drama queen” response at all. Perfectly calm and logical here, mate. Last year there were 45,755 arriving in boats across the Channel. Some of these people will be genuine asylum seekers and those who are can stay, no further debate. The vast majority, however, are young men seeking economic opportunity. That’s fine. All I’m saying is that the UK has the right of refusal if they are economic migrants. This really isn’t that difficult and I’m not sure why it’s even up for debate.

@JamesSmith-qs4hx You wrote that one yesterday, Jimbo. Nice to know you’re into recycling, mate! 🤣

@plurabelle5 I’m an anti-colonialist. A random accident of birth I had no say in doesn’t make me complicit in the colonialism of my forefathers.😉

@khoyrulislam Huh? Well, it does work like that as I never voted for that government. Nice try though, pal.👍

Tbf, Lincoln is less than 6 miles away, so I’m sure it has enough “infrastructure” to cope.

@JamesSmith-qs4hx Lol. Now why am I not surprised that Jimbo can’t even cook himself some eggs and chips? 🥴

@JamesSmith-qs4hx You’re calling yer wifey a dog now Jimbo?!?! 🤦♂️

Wtf are you on about, mate? It’s an army base, not “inner-cityesque project style housing”. Just for the record, I once visited the American Midwest; once was enough: it’s has to be the most boring, featureless, cultureless, ugly place I can possibly think of. As one of your own put it: “I come from Des Moines. Somebody had to.”
2
@dondoodat Neither do I. All I’m saying is that the host country decides for economic migrants. There is enough opportunity on this planet for many of these migrants to go to places other than Europe. If someone came to your front door and kicked it open demanding the right to stay you’d not be happy. And you’d be right not to be happy. Economic immigration should always be at the say of the host country, whichever country that may be.

@JamesSmith-qs4hx You forgot the eggs and chips, Jimbo! 🤣

@django3422 Not benefitting from anything, mate. I work hard for my money. Nothing is handed to me. I repeat again, I’m not anti legal immigration in principle; all I’m saying is that every sovereign nation has the right of refusal. It’s not up to the migrant if they are accepted; it’s up to the host country. No idea why this is up for debate. 🤷♂️ Every country around the world more or less operates this policy, so why should the UK be any different?

@tiredgardener I was referring to “infrastructure”; ie. access to health care. And anyway, as I understand it these people get a daily allowance so I’m sure they could catch a bus to Lincoln.
1
@tiredgardener Dunno. You’d have to ask those who are doing the housing.
