Lol. “A bard of Shakespearean levels”. Pure hyperbole and, frankly, utter bollix. Only someone who hasn’t read Shakespeare could make such a fatuous comment. No one, I mean quite literally no one has touched the genius of Shakespeare not only in terms of his quantity of output but in just how rich in human wisdom virtually his every line is. This guy isn’t even a minor footnote to the likes of Shaky.👍

He’s moderately interesting, but nothing special. 👍 Shakespeare is currently birling in his grave at the thought some people like Stevie had the temerity and brass neck to lump him in with an average urban songster pop thingy.

@nigelstuart756 No. The ‘only difference’ is arguably the greatest poet and playwright and person, yes person , with the greatest insight into the human condition than anyone else who has ever lived. And it isn’t Ren. Just having psychosis does not a genius make you. Most of the comments in this section bore about the psychosis as if that automatically grants you some kind of unique insight into the human condition. Ren’s palette as far as I can see is severely limited. One, two colours at most. Shaky had all the colours on the spectrum and the infinite shades in between. At least you kinda know what you’re talking about as you have a working knowledge of Shakespeare. However, what I find perplexing is how you can put Ren on a par. He’s clearly not and if you were honest with yourself and the rest of us you would admit this.

@Mezzystar1 I’ve never come across a rapper yet who isn’t.👍 Tbf to Ren, in his case he seems to have a bit of a middle-class indie shoe-gazing background so he may be more literate than the average rapper. However, regardless of his semi-literacy, or otherwise, my essential point here was the response to the nonsense claim that he was somehow on a level with Shakespeare.

@Mezzystar1 In the interests of further research I just watched his ‘Hi Ren’ thing here on YouTube. He kindly writes out all the lyrics for that 10-minute ramble. He’s semi-literate. Not the worst when it comes to rappers but to this listener his lyrics are just vaguely banal tbh. Take away the psychosis background and I’m not totally sure what he’d have to say and everything he does say appears to come from that. Tbf to him, he appears to have some musical ability, but his lyrics? Nah. He strikes me as someone who would appeal to those who simply don’t read books. Which is most people under 35 these days. And quite a few over 35. Moreover, I’m willing to bet decent money he’s not much of a reader himself. Readers can spot this a mile off.
