As a Brit, I’m going to tell what is at the root of this whole thing: class. The horse rider speaks with a middle-class accent and the dog owner has a working-class accent. Never underestimate the power of accent in the UK when it comes to people making certain judgements about others. Willing to bet fairly good money that if both these ladies spoke with similar accents, thereby denoting they belong to the same class tribe, this wouldn’t have escalated like this. The dog bite was just a convenient excuse for it to kick off.

@ I agree the dog owner was at fault, but class/accent fed into the escalation. Don’t doubt it. I know my stuff on this topic.

@paulfletcher3998 I disagree. Even if it was only subconsciously, I think class/accent fed into this interaction. I’ve studied this stuff in quite some depth and also speak with some experience of this in my own life. We are tribal. These 2 ladies are from distinct tribes according to class/accent, and it’s my judgement that if they had recognised each other (via accent) as hailing from the same class/tribe, that this probably wouldn’t have escalated in quite the way it did. It may have done, but I doubt it.
