Whatever happens, I’ve put my mortgage on a bet at William Hill that Harry Kane won’t learn more than about 3 words of German. For some reason, the vast majority of British footballers when they go abroad don’t seem to make the effort to learn the local lingo the way the foreigners coming here do. I get English is a bit of a lingua franca so it’s probably a bit easier for the foreigners coming here as they will probably have a few words of English already, but I’m always dismayed and slightly perplexed at why Brits going abroad don’t generally appear to make the same effort. Jude Bellingham, for example: 3 full years in Germany and his German speaking ability appears to be negligible and I’m not holding out much hope he’ll learn that much more Spanish. The most recent Brit footballer who played abroad and quite impressed was Lucy Bronze with her French and Fikayo Tomori’s Italian is staggeringly good in this context. As an example of what can be achieved in this domain, Romelu Lukaku can speak 8 (8!!!) foreign languages at least at a conversationally fluent level.

@mattking68 Dier’s just a rare exception that proves the rule. Moreover, Dier doesn’t count here as he spent his childhood/adolescence in Portugal.
