  1. This is scary, and I’m not talking about COVID. Shanghai’s lockdown had more than the whiff of a kind of ‘test-event’ to see just how much we are prepared to accept in the name of ‘COVID security’. This COVID thing clearly exists, but the overreaction in China smells mighty sinister, even considering the repressive regime it’s occurring under. I imagine if open, relatively free liberal democracies attempted this kind of overkill there’d be resistance to the point of civil unrest.
