  1. Self-determination based on democratic principles: this has to be the key point in any geopolitical contretemps. If a majority want something then that something is carried. It seems the majority in Ukraine want to look West, not East. This should be honoured. If a minority in the East of Ukraine looks East and not West, then they can move if they don’t like a Ukraine looking to NATO/EU/USA. Surely a way to resolve this (leaving aside Putin’s bullying, unchallenged dictatorial whim), is for a referendum to be taken on partition of Ukraine. Why this is not being more actively considered is a bit of a mystery.

  4.  @hollowparagon1102  Yeah, but in this case there is clearly a sizeable enough minority (30-40%) to make a referendum viable. Of course one wouldn’t have a referendum on each and every issue, but in the case of Ukraine, given the language/cultural differences which clearly obtain between the East and the West, to me this seems a way to be seriously looked at. If only to spare the rest of us nuclear annihilation.

  7.  @wessexdruid7598  I get that. We’d have to ensure a fair vote with independent verification as far as possible. It might need outside, neutral mediators, given the heated nature of the whole debate.

  8.  @wessexdruid7598  My basic point is quite simple: a majority of Ukrainians are looking West it seems; however, a not insignificant minority are looking East; on this basis a referendum on partition is surely the only real way to go here, unless we want this whole thing to simmer for decades.
