There is so much claim and counterclaim in this war that, as a neutral, one is left with a head spinning more than Linda Blair’s in The Exorcist . One almost begins to doubt there is actually a real war taking place at all! It couldn’t be, could it? A fake war? A counterfeit masquerading as the real thing being played out on green screens. We are all so many Truman Burbanks in a gameshow made for the sadistic delectation of we know not who. Or, Zelensky and Putin are not really flesh and blood humans but a kind of Westworld cyborg created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. All this talk of ‘puppet regimes’ should’ve been the giveaway: they are going to install Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy as an interim measure until the Ukrainians have a goddamn referendum on partition, thereby obviating a lot of unnecessary bother for the rest of us. None of this is real. Is it?
