  1. Main issue here is America’s ‘pull factor’. Clearly for the bulk of these poor people, the USA represents a chance at life. If America doesn’t want these migrants, it should make the utmost effort to ensure that the economic situation in Latin America is conducive to making people want to remain there. My personal take on this is that obviously asylum seekers should be heard with compassion while purely economic migrants should be accepted only if the US can accommodate them. Australia does this well. It has a points system whereby it ‘targets’ those it actually needs for its economy, whilst still lending a compassionate ear to those genuine refugees. There is no easy answer to this. As long as the US is relatively prosperous vis-a-vis Latin America, this flow of people will not stop of its own volition.
