  1. My great grandparents along family, friends, and neighbors all immigrated from Germany in the late 1800s where my grandmother was a first generation American. Her parents decided their children were gong to be Americans so they never spoke German around the children, only English. Others in that community thought differently and wanted to make sure the children didn't forget their heritage. My father was born in 1923 (myself in 1951) and he never really talked about most of my grandmothers family other that the immediate members. Seems some of the family didn't think Uncle Adolf was such a bad guy and he came to power and needing men for the Wehrmacht, asked for young men from America to return to the Fatherland, so a couple of my father's cousins did answer the call. My father and uncles all joined the US Army before the war and as things went bad, fortunately none died although the PoW experience wasn't good. Remember that scene for Band of Brothers where they encountered English speaking Germans for Oregon, my fathers cousins never returned either.
