Yeah, this seems strange to me, the ak47, as in the 1947 pattern, was retired in the 50s. 40s: ak47, 7.62 WP 50s: AKM, 7.62 WP 70s: AK74 (1974 pattern) 5.45 00s: AK12 with more recoil suppression Soviet and subsequently Russian doctrine calls for massed fairly accurate fully automatic fire from a conscript army. Russia's moved to a professional army with reserves but kept the fully automatic requirement. You can see this in the recoil impulse of the 5.45, much smaller than the 5.56.
