  1. This polar bear is old and dying. Cry for them if you will but they don't live forever. Notice that Paul Nicklen mentioned other FAT polar bears around the corner. In the early 1970's their population was around 1000 to 5000. Polar bears are listed as vulnerable to extinction, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, and there are around 36,000 individuals left in the wild. I've seen other estimates between 22,000 to over 50,000.
