  1. The ban of Rushdie's book in India backfired a lot and was largely seen as appeasing Muslims. It became a seminal moment in the rise of Hindu nationalism. Ironically Modi owes it to Rushdie for the rise of his party to what it is today. For me it's a teaching moment, you can't compromise on Liberal values without damaging social cohesion.
