Uddhav Thackeray was probably pleasant with politicians but he never extended that plesantries to linguistic and religious minorites. He never hesitated to boast about beating away UP Biharis and calling them a stain in Maharashtra's culture.

That's because both DMK and ADMK are entrenched in the economy. Sun Group is DMK, Sundaram group is ADMK, plenty of factories in Hosur have DMK, ADMK hands in them.

AIADMK and ADMK have been at a Truce ever since Karunanidhi and Jayalathitha passed away. The bad blood between the two parties died away with them. That said, I think both parties should take a page from Canada's Quebec political parties. Unite into one party at the National level and compete at the State level. Right now only TN parties seems to keep Delhi in check. TN parties strength in TN keeps Delhi from doing too much to TN without long consultations with them. TN was largely spared from the excess of the emergency after all.

@jayantjolly the local 'goons' were actually pretty approachable and nice especially in the suburbs. But yes, there was plenty of Stockholm syndrome that came with living under the Sena. Up until the 90s Maharashtrian didn't realize South Indians were Hindus as well. They used to call our Ganesh puja as, "Woh toh, Anna log ka puja hai. Unka bhagvan". That realization along with the wealth and patronage (through temples, education institutes and businesses) that came from the South Indian community they eventually co-opted them. The lead up to '93 riots, they went after Muslims. After '93, BalaSaheb's regret was rather noticeable and nationalism become his stint. That transformed to UP Biharis bashing that continues on to this day. Now the South Indian community has become a strategic vote bank especially in the North Konkan region.

@glor5978 there is. Especially in assembly election. In general elections they don't amount to much.

@jayantjolly Sena has lost it ever since they became dynastic.

@fly17 Jayalalitha and Karunanidhi hated each other extremely personally. When they passed away, the new generation decided not to hold b grudges anymore. That's the truce I'm talking about. Besides both parties have entrenched themselves in the economy, that's structural corruption.
