Comparing political dynasties in the West and India is like comparing apples to oranges.
Here's the thing about Indian Political dynasties and Western political dynasties:
- In India, the dynasty dominates the party and uses the party for their wishes. Party positions are inherited.
- In the West, a dynast still needs to fight the nomination process, they have to earn the trust of the party.
Roosevelts, Kennedys, Bushs, Clintons and Trump, all had to win the nomination. Bush Sr. did not appoint Bush Jr. as his successor. In a sense, the party sometimes uses dynasties for their advantage. If Justin Trudeau loses the next election, he will be asked to resign his position. But in India, the Party acts more like a monarchy of a particular family.

Ask a Bangladeshi, what is the priority for economic reforms and they'll say to eliminate Poverty. Ask a Sri Lankan, Nepali, Bhutanese, Burmese or Indian the same question, they will have similar answers. Ask an African what is their first priority and they will say it is to get rid of Poverty. But ask a Pakistani what is their priority and the response will be 'Kashmir"
And that is the problem, the entire establishment is tunnel visioned about Kashmir. At LSE panel titled "Can Pakistan become South Asia's Powerhouse?" hosted about about 6 months ago, the Pakistani establishment was making a case that the economic reforms should take place because "A stronger Pakistan will help with Kashmir". When you are tunneled visioned about capturing Kashmir, then everything else becomes secondary. Only failed dictatorships who have ruined their country into oblivion treats economic well being as tool for territorial conquest.
Frankly, I'd encourage it. If they want to doom themselves with debt acquired for territorial conquest, so be it. Better help them drown themselves in more debt. Great empires collapsed under the burden of debt - a backwater State like Pakistan will collapse sooner.
P.S.: Bangladeshis, you have our respect. Y'all crawl from being a backwater traumatized with a genocide to a textile powerhouse. More riches to you, we hope to trade more with you and become richer together.

We grew up hating wealth. Our textbooks and movie culture was heavily influenced by Marxism and Socialism. Bollywood movies would always show the Businessman as a cheat, lying, evil and diabolical anti national. Textbooks would heap enormous praise regarding the accomplishment of Govt owned enterprises. Nehru, India's first PM publicly said, "Profit is a bad word". Govt always used Private sector failures to mask it's own enormous failures. So ya, it's been 60 years of Brainwashing. The current generation is the first one to have not lived under Govt's Democratic Socialism policies.
If you are wondering, why didn't anyone come to the defence of free enterprise? Well they did. They were systemically socially excluded. Govt excluded them from printing papers, Business friendly policy makers were denied Govt Advisory positions, Businesses were denied access to policymakers, (Indian National Congress) unleashed their goons at Businessmen, criminalized their businesses overnight and harassed them with non compliance, despite all that if they complained the govt nationalized it or shut it down by unleashing labor unions at them.

What we are seeing in NITI Aayog is simply a headstart advantage that West Bengal always enjoyed. It is an advantage that West Bengal is squandering away.
Gujarat grew up from the bottom. 80s and 90s Gujarat was a drought prone backwater like UP or Rajasthan today. Beset with political instability, lack of state institutions, obstructionism spearheaded by India's leftists and Andolanjeevis stunted it's growth. Things changed since the late 90s, political stability that BJP majorities brought, focused that State's resources to economic development. Much of the State is still Work in Progress and that's what we are seeing. And with more tax revenues and resources, I am confident that Gujarat will focus on those lagging indicators.
Contrast that with West Bengal, it was a rich state endowed with resources and infrastructure and blessed with educated urbanites and industrialists, created in 1947 - far earlier than some of our rich Southern states. But West Bengal's growth has stalled, political stability it enjoyed turned into autocratic violence. Any advantage West Bengal had was let to rot and atrophy. West Bengal is not beating Gujarat in MPDM indicators because it did something new or brilliant, but it is beating Gujarat because of institutions that were established prior generations ago are still somewhat functional.
Odissa is ahead of West Bengal, soon UP will surpass it as well. IMO, Odissa and Gujarat would be a better comparison but comparing Gujarat with WB is an editorial decision.
Side note: Besides, no State has made headway in it's poverty intensity indicators but I suspect it is still early days. MPDM is still a fairly new index. However, with such marginal decline across states, I doubt State Govts have anything to do with reduction in Poverty Intensity. Any reduction probably came from Centrally Sponsored Programs.
(And Yes, I spent 3 days reading through every detail in NITI Aayog report.)

This is a bit of a bad take. The case in point that contradicts what TCA has to say is Agnipath reforms. It is a meaningful and crucial fiscal reform, that gives Govt a lot of flexibility in terms of how it spends its revenue. But look at the reaction, riots on the street, opposition parties clamouring for attention etc.
Govt also gave Cantonment land back to Local Bodies, this might seem inconsequential but this is also economic reforms that will have tremendous impact on our economy (Places like Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune have huge Cantonment areas, the economic transformation potential in these lands are huge). But it shows that Govt is still pushing for reforms but maybe not louds but small ones that matters.
We can't blame the BJP for not pushing through reforms, but like everything else, there's success, there's failures and there's success pushed through sheer will.

Earlier this year, the Oxford Center for Hindu Studies held a conference regarding how Hinduism is defined along Euro centric and protestant lines. What does this Euro centric perspective of Hinduism mean? Well it means, if Hinduism doesn't follow the Protestant model, it is not modern, incapable of reforms, stuck in it's old ways. It also means you ignore reform within Hindu practices and institutions. This means people with 'Protestant' leanings and/or influences are projected as the sole class of reformist people. For eg, Reforms promulgated by anti caste Ramalinga in the South are labeled as not modern, maintaining barbaric practices. That's why we learn more about Raja Ram Mohan Roy (I must stress, his efforts should not be understated) and not someone like Ramalinga.
Thanks to Nehru, this perspective has essentially been cemented into Indian intellectual thought and propagated by Govt since Independence. In some sense previous/contemporary generation of Indian intellectuals, have ironically become Macaulay's children or Macaulayputra.
This was just with Hinduism, now the same intellectual extends that thought tradition to India as a concept, country, idea etc.
I think we do need a serious rethink about several things about India.

WTH, there are limits to blindly praising someone.
End of Zamindars, land reforms, linguistic states was not a result of Nehru. Heck he was very reluctant against those reforms. All of those reforms came as a result of grassroot movements. He ruined the IAS (ICS) with his diktats and rampant nationalization after 1955.
He was the founder of IIT, AIIMS and IIM. However, Nehru was already dead when ISRO was founded (1969, Nehru died in 1962). He cracked down on Freedom of Speech, he whipped his party to pass Article 19(a). Incidentally, the BJP's spiritual founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Ambedkar were staunchy against it. Election Commission was not his brainchild, it was a combined genuises of the Constituent Assembly. All the Liberal values you claim to cherish, was a result of Ambedkar - Nehru was against the passage of Hindu Code Bill (which itself was a compromise from UCC).

The recent humanitarian disaster of a second Covid wave got me thinking a lot. I am a NRI, I have an emotional connection with my country and I absolutely want to grow and succeed and I hope to see it within my lifetime. We are at a crisis and a juncture - people are dying because they are unable to breathe. That symbolic of massive paralysis of the social fabric of this country and that paralysis has now been laid bare in front of us as a pandemic.
We need to be extremely honest, unless we are honest, we will keep repeating mistakes. We Indians, do not understand our society, our government, our legal system, bureaucracy and more importantly scale of problems we face. And amazingly, we still don't understand and refuse to study it.
It was very disappointing to watch people celebrating Holi, going to Kumbh, weddings, partying.
It was absolutely shameful and infuriating to watch NDTV host a bloody solutions summit while cases rapidly rising in Maharashtra - key official who are supposed to manage this crisis were on Bloody News Channel instead of making preparations, increasing testing, making arrangements for migrants.
I was horrified in late March when Uddhav was pondering, if there should be a lockdown or not in Mumbai. I was horrified when the CM of Delhi would rather be on NDTV doing press conferences than starting stockpiling process.
I was angry when PILs were filed in the courts - in the middle of a crisis, we are pulling away decision making resources to attend courts. I was extremely angry at Amit Shah's arrogance at throwing stats like "It is under what we expect" (Bloody hell, a Million deaths is just a mere statistic).
I was absolutely angry that our political parties are still engaging in trench warfare on News Channel - they still are.
I was horrified to watch your Bengal coverage and no matter what the Election Commission still wanted to proceed with elections and I am in absolute shock at the lack of coverage for Panchyat Raj elections in UP - We are in a middle of pandemic and our largest state with abysmal health infrastructure is conducting elections in of it's most vulnerable rural population.
How can anyone tolerate this madness? Have we lost our sense of responsibility? Where is the seriousness?
You can blame Modi sarkar for this mess but if we stop there then we have learnt nothing. This is a complete breakdown of everything and everyone is paying for it including the NRIs who haven been rejected and thrown away. We need more people to talk about these things. We need people to be educated about our government, governance models the deep hole of trust.

@metagde6402 it's because of the bureaucracy. It's corruption made by the Govt. for the Govt. to the benefit of the Govt. It's the regulations and more importantly the interpretation of those regulations that makes the environment really conducive to corruption. Given the backlog in the court system (and quality of judges), you can't even dispute the interpretations of those regulations. So you're left with one choice and that's to pay the bribe.
Lemme give you an example: You want to build a warehouse, you find a plot of land, look up it's development use and apply to purchase a land deed from the owner of the plot. In every other country, this is typical a two step process, verify the use is appropriate according to the development plan and the purchase of the plot. The purchase is private transaction between two private entities. In India, in addition to that, you need the local District magistrate to sign off on your purchase and the court clerk to validate the seller was of sound mental health at the time of the transaction. So, the DM will not sign off until the clerk is done with their validation of the seller's mental health and vice versa. Now if either DM or clerk refuses, you're left with disputing the decision in your local sessions court. Sessions court judge will likely adjourn your case ad nauseum until either your business dies or it makes no sense to build that warehouse. So you, as a businessman is essentially blackmailed by regulations and forced to pay a bribe.
In such an environment, do you really think anyone would think about running an business without bribing someone? It's foolish especially since business transactions are time sensitive.

@thrillhouse7867 call me what you want. I care about housing, I ain't getting it from the Liberals.
I've campaigned for Liberals, door knocked, phones, volunteered for GOTV for the previous 3 elections. I've participated in Riding associations, I've volunteered time reviewing policy docs for them. Paid for those expensive convention events, townhalls etc. I've filled survey after survey after survey for Liberal Party. So ya, I've put in effort to get my issues of housing on the forefront. So ya, you can go on and keep telling me about Poilievre's failures and how is the enemy of the working class but it won't find any traction. Because even after 8 years, Liberals don't have a solution, not even a partial one. The disappointment that comes from not being heard is deeper than anything you have to say about Poilievre right now. And that's the sad reality for many Canadians not just me.

@urbaneindiana3089 you keep changing the goal post. You asked how the judiciary held back the country, I answered.
Keeping Sedition Act means Police can still book you under a vague act with vague definitions of sedition. This means you and I can be booked under Section 124A for just complaining against an officer of the Govt of India. A simple complain against a Govt officials regarding their behavior towards you can be considered as "exciting dissatisfaction against Govt of India" (by definition also includes State govts).
Consider the following examples:
In real terms, today if you call Aditya Thackeray a faku penguin, you would satisfy the criteria of "exciting dissatisfaction against Govt. Of India."
Similarly, if you say Yogi Adityanath's handling of the second wave was poor, you satisfy the criteria for Sedition act.
Similarly, if you believe Udhav Thackeray was stupid to scuttle the depot at Aarey colony, then you satisfy the criteria for Sedition Act.
As a side note, CrPC has more such vague badly defined laws. They were intentionally made vague by the British so that they can book anyone, anyway, any time and anywhere. So technically you are breaking the law by just existing. We inherited that piece of shit Criminal code. Scrap that and you would cut case loads significantly. The rest of the backlog is because Govt of India sues itself over violations of some outdated Act. So scraping laws is important but so is enforcing precedent and building a good court culture. That is the Supreme Court's job that they abdicated ever since they rejected reforms since 1994.

Just an observation, the sexism in the comments is rampant. Whenever Jyoti or Ruhi have an perspective to share the comments just becomes nasty. Jyoti is a librandu and Ruhi is Congi fangirl. Shekharji is spared most of this nastiness. Besides he depends on the same folks the comments are nasty against.
Have some respect, these folks put in work to gather reports, schedule interviews, debates, read up often very dry and technical publications to present to you the reader and consumers, news that's factual, without drama that you would typically see in TV media. All this is presented in a coherent, simple manner and their articles are available for free and fast.
It might not be what you might agree with but if news was all about presenting perspectives you agree with, it's no longer news, it's propaganda.
Constructive criticism is fine, sexism is not. Keep it clean.

@PawanDubeyK Adarsh Gram Yojana just got a massive top up in money. But not all Gram panchayats can willy nilly spend that money, they need to put in competitive bids on how they will use it. It is smaller version of Smart Cities.
Consultations have improved yo. Look no further than DPDP act - it went through 7 rounds of consultations and 3 re-drafts. Unlike in the Congress era, today Govt depts have to issue mandatory open comment periods, you can send comment via mail, email, website or through NGOs like Civis. I actively participate in the process, my recommendation were incorporated in acts like DPDP Act. Right now as we argue in the comments, Govt is soliciting comments for rule changes for LLP Act (5 days left to put in your comments) and restructuring rules under Companies Act (5 days left), Fitness of Colleges under UGC act (13 days left), comments on Draft Electricity Transmission plan (35 days left), End of Life (management of Vehicles) proposed bill and rules (39 days left) etc. If that's not consultation then you are wilfully blind. Just cause you don't participate in consultations, doesn't mean the Govt doesn't engage in consultations. On the other hand, this Govt has democratized incorporating comments.
All you complain about is procedural issues. That is just politics. If Rajiv Gandhi can abuse 12th schedule for his legislative agenda then using money bills or omnibus bills is not a big deal.
Do you get paid to spread misinformation with confidence? Here take you Rs. 2 and move on.

Anand Sharma does injustice to Indians by not ousting the Gandhi family. Sirf bhasan dete hai, 60 saal power mein rahe, kya ukhada in logo ne?
Achievements? Let's talk about his achievements.
This guy was the commerce minister under UPA between 2009 and 2014. between 2009 and 2011, textiles was growing an average of of roughly 10%. Magar, this guy's National Manufacturing Policy introduced in 2011, that policy couple of just non deliverance on promised infrastructure (this was Sagarmala before Sagarmala) killed whatever meagre investments manufacturers made in anticipation of expected growth. Instead of growing, it killed textiles industry's productivity, value added became stagnant till 2018 (when it finally breached the $35 billion mark), killed a lot of manufacturing jobs in an industry known for labor intensity. If the textiles industry was a country in itself, it would gone through 5 year long recession, 3.5 years under this guy.
There were pretty good reasons why UPA (particularly the Congress) was voted out so badly in 2014.
This is not sarcasm but whoever wrote his speech, did an injustice to the economy of India.

@pp_01123 Look at China's trajectory and our Trajectory from 2004 and you will see how much of a lead we gave them. In 2004, China was 1.5x our PCI, in 2014, China's PCI became 9x our PCI.
We wasted our growth, ignored reforms, forgot about building infrastructure, defunded our armed forces, engaged in huge land grabs, pushed away investments, underfunded research etc. I can go on and on. We had growth, that's undeniable but we wasted it away, that is also undeniable.

@abhilashrao5350 He thrashed the opposition with Demonetization in 2019. He came back with a bigger majority.
Corona, vaccine rollout was better than the developed countries. While America was issuing poorly made paper records, Modi crafty used digitization to ensure it reached the entire population 4 times. Meanwhile, the opposition was wishing he failed - dug their own grave.
Sabka vikas toh ho raha hai. A ignored section of lower caste, today gets a pakka house, toilet, gas cylinder for 3 months, Jal from the nal, two trips to Hajj in their lifetime and soft loans and scholarship for education.
Bullet train hasn’t been forgotten on the other hand, BJP has gone the extra step advertising it. Kabhi toh NHSRCL ka YouTube channel jaake dekh.
5 trillion goal is still there.
BJP hasn’t abandoned its goals or shyed away from their failures. Where they fail, they adapt and come back with better programs. That’s their strength.

@anurag78670 Services maane tujhe paisa chahiye, paise ke bina tu qualify nahi ho sakta hai Services job ke liye. IT industry 135 crore log ko thodhi absorb kar sakta hai. 10 saal aur 25% per year growth ke bawajut IT industry barely 20 lakh ko kaam de sakha. Baki logon rozgar dena hai toh tujhe manufacturing, textiles, value added agriculture (packaged masala, paneer tikka masala etc.) chahiye. Ek manufacturing rozgar ke liye tujhe jyada qualification nahi chahiye. Dhung ka timely salary milta aur us rozgar mein tera upskill hona chance hai, usse 'gainful employment' kehte hai.
Manufacturing nahi hai toh, baki jo bina rozgar baithe hai, unne permanently freebies dekhe rakna padega. Dosri baat, jinko rozgar nahi hai, un log chindi degree karid ke pardesi mein safai karmachari bante hai.
In short, Manufacturing ke bina Bharat ke garib hamesha garib rahegi aur jin log ke pass pardes jaane ki paisa hai un log kush rahege.
Isiliye jo Raghuram Rajan kah raha hai, woh bahut haanikarak hai.

So the Opposition in our country is stupid. Let's break down Narendra Modi here for a bit (and BJP).
Modi's power comes from 4 legs
- Hindutva
- Nationalism
- Infrastructure
- Delivery of Services
Let's start with Nationalism. Modi's Nationalism is India first policy, which encompasses asserting India as a global power and strategic partner. You can see that with his clear foreign policy and national security priorities. When it comes to each State, he makes it a point to speak in their local language and embrace their local culture and fit in. The opposition can either align with it or present a better alternative, what does the opposition do instead? Kejriwal instead goes into DeshBhakt mode rather than project Delhi has a world class city or host something like Invest Delhi. Rahul Gandhi, well he invites British MP David Milliband for poverty tourism and says, "This is real India" or bring back Article 370. Mamta Banarjee is busy being Bengali rather than Indian, she does not make space for other States in her own campaign speeches. The only one here who comes close to the energy of Modi's Nationalism is Shiv Sena and DMK (AIADMK as well) with their regional variations.
Infrastructure, this is an easy one for any opposition ruled state to take advantage of. But unless if it's a BJP run state, Infra projects are barely talked about. This is even more evident when you look at status for projects in the National Infrastructure pipeline portal. AMRUT, PM-AWAS-U, Smart Cities grants allocated for non BJP states have lied unspent (it's in their dashboards). Only opposition parties that's doing well here are YSR Congress and TRS.
Delivery of Services, with the exception of Odissa and BJP ruled states, no other state bothered with attaching their name to scheme or improving delivery. There's very visible progress from the Centres when it comes to it's schemes - Jan Dhan, Nal se Jal, PMUY all have received praise for it's reach and delivery. Again, the only folks here who seems to be working on it are YSR Congress and TRS. (Too early to judge DMK)
And then you have the final leg that's Hindutva. The opposition, of all things caught on this and are trying to out Hindutva Modi this like a bunch of Bollywood music producers following KPop trends. This is a fool's errand. The opposition can't even present a coherent alternative to Hindutva or their own interpretation of Hindutva. You might disagree with Owasi, but at least here, he presents an alternative grounded on constitutional values for some parts of the day.
This is why I think they are stupid. They are so full of themselves and stuck up that they don't realize that they can easily outmanoeuvre Modi on 3 legs of his politics.
