How does Robert Peel fit into that, the Tory who practically founded free market economics?

In conflict only in terms of remit. Socialism in one country or in many countries. Both are socialist

Yes if we are going for historical accuracy more than common current usage then I am a classical liberal

@Fredrikschou I mostly agree, but you spoiled that a bit with your analogy. Yes, a hotdog does not contain dog (have you noticed it is one word and not two) - but National Socialism does indeed contain socialism (as does Italian Fascism). It may not be a type of socialism that many people like (nowadays) but it is a kind of socialism. It is far too convenient for the modern Left to 'No True Scotsman' its way out of Nazi associations ('Only Marxism counts brah') but what really takes the cake is their brazen attempt to label Nazism as right-wing.

Edited for minor grammar etc

@Fredrikschou Well again I don't think we are that far apart. I simply ask that the Left acknowledges that Nazism, Bolshevism, Menshevism, Fascism et al, all have a common ancestry whereas Liberalism, Neoliberalism are an entirely different species. I have thought that Capitalism and Liberalism, being birthed in the 18th century were the new idea, and socialism is just a repackaged version of the state controls everyone through its guild system and mercantilist foreign trade. The medieval period returns. I might enquire as to what you mean by 'socially' right-wing and how you can separate out social from economic policy. Every policy costs something

The French did mutiny on a large scale, which consisted of them defending their trenches but refusing to launch (suicidal, as they saw it) assaults. This was a response to the disastrous Nivelle offensive among other things. From 1917 onward the bulk of the offensive weight of the Western Front was carried by Britain - this is absolutely not 'fake history'

Hmmm, Robert Peel was a Tory, not a Liberal, so not sure about that

MajorLeague Precisely. If today American industry was reorganised under the auspices of 'Trump Works' and a 4 year plan we'd call that nationalisation, because that's what it would be
