Comments by "k98killer" (@k98killer) on "Quantum Supremacy With Google?" video.
The main problem with quantum computers is that they break almost all of our public key cryptography, meaning we will have to adapt the software and hardware on our smartphones and laptops to use much less efficient cryptographic primitives, e.g. instead of elliptic curves with 64 byte keys we will have to use McEliece codes with their >4MB keys or Merkle trees with thousands of single-use Lamport signature keys each >16KB. Perhaps it wouldn't be such an issue if quantum technology was available for the masses, but we are currently looking at a situation where only the most wealthy and powerful entities will have the ability to snoop on everything we do, so we will have the burden of running less efficient crypto to preserve our privacy for a while. Also, how many triceratops do you need, Styx?
