On the gold standard: while I dislike the fact of the inflation tax levied by the banks and the Fed in contravention of American philosophy (which Fed board member is my representative?), it is indeed true that utility value interferes with price discovery, so the best money would be one that has no utility. Having a steady quantity/reasonable monetary policy is generally more important than having utility. Ideally, the currency unit should be an abstraction that represents the productive capacity of the transactors and has steady per capita supply and demand characteristics.
