  2. I recommend making a ruana cloak out of fleece for keeping warm and comfy/cozy. (The controversy over "comfy womfy" vs "cozy wozy" remains unresolved, so use whichever term you like.) It is basically a blanket that doesn't fall off/unwrap easily, and you can use it as a blanket when not wearing it. All you have to do is measure and cut when using fleece or felt. For an outdoor cloak to keep the rain or snow off, you'll want canvas or linen treated with beeswax for waterproofing, and that will require a bit of sewing to hem the edges and prevent fraying. Skip cutting a large hole for the neck if you want to use it for warmth.

Permaculture gardens with some Stropharia mushroom mycelium is a decent plan (Stropharia literally turns wood debris into a healthy source of protein). Peas/beans are good annual crops for fixing nitrogen, and potatoes or sweet potatoes are good for producing starchy calories in small spaces. Biodiversity is key to sustainability and pest resistance, so plant a hedgerow or two of native plants while you're at it.

My main concern with crypto as an asset class is the current reliance upon elliptic curves and the difficulty of solving discrete logarithms, which can theoretically be broken by quantum computers. China supposedly just tested a new quantum computer that is at least as powerful as Google's latest model, so I think caution is warranted. NIST will be finalizing their post-quantum crypto standard next year or the year after (I think that Crystals-Kyber and Crystals-Dilithium will be included in the final spec since it is one system that fits both use cases of encryption and creating digital signatures). Bitcoin and other cryptos will be unable to transition over to a post-quantum encryption system without a hard fork, and all those who do not make the transition are likely to lose their crypto savings.

The 2008 bailout was to preserve the eurodollar system; if it had just been a matter of American depositors, the banks would have been closed down on the weekend, all the deposits and good assets placed in a new institution, and then the old bank with toxic assets left to collapse and wipe out the investors. My understanding is that the FDIC has been able to make depositors whole and turn a profit doing it, though they have had to plug the holes a few times using their own funds. Even in a systemic collapse, some institutions would be left standing, and new institutions would be set up to replace the ones that fall, so there's a decent chance that depositors will only get screwed if they're foreigners.

  24. When you say "statistics", what you mean to say is "odds". You can't collect "statistics" on unique events, but you could calculate odds. However, every event is improbable when you consider how many different variables theoretically could have been different for each event. What you keep stumbling upon is what Carl Jung called "synchronicity", and it will baffle you until you get a grasp on the concept. Hidden variables causing these synchronicities (e.g. secret cabals) are unlikely to exist, and prognostication on such is largely irrelevant.

The Fed will lever it 30x or more, and they'll just take the collateral if a loan defaults and count it at par value, so it won't show up as a loss for them anyway. The $25B is just to have a number there -- they could have funded it with $1. However, it is still a dumb shell game: Treasury borrows $25B from the Fed to fund an LLC that will borrow from the Fed to buy T-bills and T-bonds from illiquid/insolvent banks. But it should work technically.

  64. In the US, the banks won't allow a CBDC unless they can somehow manage to change their business models to be profitable without being able to issue currency. The introduction of FedNow obviates a CBDC because all of the theoretical upsides they could sell to the public are already present in FedNow without any change in balance sheets or system structure. The potential issue with FedNow is that the data exchange format could include a lot of telemetry (i.e. surveillance), but this will require everyone to opt-in to supplying those fields, and doing so is costly in terms of computation, bandwidth, and storage -- they'll probably eventually start mandatong such things through AML regulations, but we are likely years away from that. The ISO standard was already being slowly adopted globally by the banking industry, and Brazil has run a system like FedNow successfully for decades already, so my guess is that the FedNow model will likely become the standard in the West.

Rather, it is a fast, 24/7, net settlement system for transacting between financial institutions. For FedNow to work, financial institutions have to exist. If anything, the additional speed will increase the risk of bank run and cause reserve ratios to increase in banks, pushing the riskier credit creation into the shadow banking system which will also use FedNow but with more gatekeeping. The people in charge would likely prefer if people used more cash because that would decrease the risk of bank runs.

Instead, the credit union fails, depositors get bailed out by the NCUA up to the FDIC maximum, and remaining assets less liabilities are distributed to remaining equity holders (i.e. the seven natural persons who started the credit union and any shares not bailed out by the NCUA).

This is because interest expenses can be deducted from taxable income, and the lower sale price means your real estate tax will be lower. The way the homestead exemption works is that the assessed property value changes more slowly than market conditions, so if you buy a house at a peak, you'll be saddled with a high tax bill until you sell (at a loss) and buy a new house at the lower price. So in general, you're better off with a lower house value and higher interest rate all else being equal.
