That was the legacy of Christendom: Byzantium did not want alternative ideas and factual history to disprove the official Christian Empire narrative. Even today, Christians are totally ignorant of the mystery religions that were precursors for the Jesus story, which is original only in some names and locations, specifically because the evidence was destroyed and suppressed by the Christian emperors.
