I think the main thing hampering you during your early expansion was that you did not have enough storage to support your fabricators: the energy in particular swung wildly negative and then wildly positive. Also, hemorrhaging would be when you are wasting/producing excess resources that you aren't using. I think the term you meant when you were low on metal was "anemic" ;)
