  2. The tribes who lived there for thousands of years kept it under control with good forestry management practices. It is a modern stupidity to build up huge amounts of highly flammable material all over the place and all around where people live when people could instead burn the brush early. The winds are more severe than I have seen in previous, catastrophic fires, but the underlying problem is the same in California as it is (after the Green Party passed some idiotic legislation a few years ago) in Australia: poor management leading to exacerbated and avoidable outcomes.

  13. Chinese military doctrine is about deception. Those barges could just as easily be used to land troops in Outer Manchuria in a suckerpunch move against Russia. They have already claimed a strategically significant waterway, which Russia conceded halfheartedly, and they have wanted to reclaim Outer Manchuria for quite a while. It will not surprise me if this is all a ruse to get Russia to overextend in Ukraine and become vulnerable to an attack from China.

  27. It's not just Putin. Y'all haven't been paying attention. There is a hyper nationalist faction that wants the war even more than Putin does and has threatened or attempted coups over it. It may not be the majority of the Russian populace, but there is still a significant portion. Y'all may not lend any credence to the notion that America provoked Russia with the political meddling in Ukraine and promises to bring Ukraine into NATO, but the Russians sure do.

I think that a path of starting as a fragmented confederation, then consolidating smaller autonomous zones into larger ones, then forming a federation would give the Syrians enough time to gain stability in each community and figure out what exactly they want out of their government and how it should be structured. It seems that this path has historically led to long-term stability. The groups within a Syrian confederation would also get experience working together to fend off the worst extremists threatening their peace without immediately organizing their armed forces under a command structure that might not work well.

  42. I think this is a really good format. Not only is it topical, but there will be additional replay value for months to come since it is not tied to a specific set of breaking news items. I also enjoyed it quite a bit. The background music choice was also pretty good since it still sounds good at 1.25x, 1.5x, and 1.75x speeds -- a lot of music sounds atrocious when sped up, but thankfully this does not.
