  1. Trump's side does not have to lie to make the news media seems untrustworthy -- they prove they are untrustworthy themselves. The reason that moderates would support Trump is simply that they despise his enemies more because that is how plurality voting distorts democratic processes. A politician lying is nothing new, but news media organizations blatantly and so obviously lying about a politician is much more significant because they are supposed to be capable of accurately reporting facts. (Some examples are the lie that Trump called immigrants "animals" when in fact he was talking only about MS13 gang members; the lie that Trump said the white nationalists at the Unite the Right rally were "very fine people" when in fact he said they "should be condemned totally"; and the lie that Trump is a "Putin puppet" when in fact his administration killed hundreds of Russians in Syria.) If we had a sensible voting system, e.g. combined approval voting, both Harris and Trump would lose to a good candidate.
