An important note about energy efficiency in appliances is that the reduced energy consumption meant lower costs to operate, and that correlated with reductions in acquisition and maintenance costs. The result was that the aggregate energy consumption increased as more people could afford to buy and run the appliances. Energy efficiency will not reduce energy consumption at a population scale -- it just means more resources will be available to generate more wealth, enabling the use of more resources.
