First-past-the-post is one of the worst possible electoral methods, especially for singular positions where electing a consensus candidate would be more appropriate. We really ought to replace it with some form of score voting. The simplest improvement would be to replace fptp with approval voting, where each elector votes for any number of candidates, but the best method would be STAR with negative votes (i.e. score each candidate between -1 and +1).
